Why I garden:
1) The food can be better see tomatoes.
2) The food may be impossible to find anywhere else, giving you varieties, flavors, qualities that no store is selling.
3) It is an act that connects us to all our ancestors and connects us what it is to be human; that we have been adapted/ created/ evolved for. Not gathering /growing / preparing your own food is a modern invention that is inhuman in a literal sense. “human” should be what our species does and have been doing since there have been humans. And for 99% of human existence, it did something that is closely resembled by gardening.
4) As Should be surprising to no one, that doing an activity that resembles what your species has done 99% of it’s existence feels good and is relaxing
5) I develop skills which are practical in a disruption to modern life
6) I spend less currency feeding myself
7) Done well the nutrient recycling from waste streams (composting) to gardens, is the equivalent of growing money. #gardening #grownostr
My kids are finally old enough that I broke out the legos I’ve been keeping in the basement. And a blast was had by all. Truly one of the most formative toys of my youth. I hope it shapes their brains as it shaped mine. I put it up there with listening to my Dad’s stories working at Cincinnati Electro systems as a QA tester, day dreaming through my summer breaks, and building projects with my father.

Why are most of your replies spam Susan? Why!?!

TIL that birth ratios seem to skew towards more females during famine. Mothers in good condition are more likely to give birth to sons, whereas mothers in poor condition are more likely to give birth to daughters.

From the article sighted:
“Starting just over one year after the beginning of the famine, Song found a sharp dip in the proportion of boys being born — falling from 109 boys born for every 100 girls in April 1960 to 104 boys for every 100 girls by October 1963, about two years after the famine ended. The ratio did not return to pre-famine levels until around July 1965.”
So I don’t think this lives up to the headline. The ratio does not skew to more females, it skewed to slightly less of a male dominance. My alternative hypothesis would be that male infants, which have a single X chromosome, may be more sensitive to environmental factors. And while their mothers were starving they may have in their desperation may have consumed odd plants, spoiled food, clays and dirt. Which may have led to birth defects which ended more pregnancies of males than females.
So who else did this at LAN parties?

I’m a fan of his, if you just stumbled across him, have you listened to the Berlin Wall episode yet. It’s my personal favorite.

One of the practical benefits of a censorship resistant platform is people reveal who they really are, rather than conforming to a platform’s rules. The obvious benefit is a more free speech for disrupting the narratives and propaganda. The more subtle benefit is the masks come off and you can more easily identify who your tribe is and who are the jerks. If being a jerk is controlled by the platform and you don’t know it, then your network has a landmine in it. #nostr
