The Japanese have been producing wood for 700 years without cutting down trees. In the 14th century, the extraordinary daisugi technique was born in Japan.

Indeed, the daisugi provide that these trees will be planted for future generations and not be cut down but pruned as if they were giant bonsai trees; by applying this technique to cedars, the wood that can be obtained is uniform, straight and without knots, practically perfect for construction.

A pruning as a rule of art that allows the tree to grow and germinate while using its wood, without ever cutting it down.

Extraordinary technique.

Written as 台杉, the Daisugi technique literally means platform cedar, a technique that uses existing trees to grow additional trees. The result of such a technique looks like an open palm with multiple perfectly vertical trees growing out of it thus creating a sustainable harvest of timber from a single tree.

Maiden Castle in Dorset is not only the largest hill fort in Britain but also one of the most important prehistoric sites in Europe.

Constructed around 600 BC during the Early Iron Age, it stretches nearly 914 meters (almost 3,000 feet) across a commanding hilltop. Its immense, multi-layered ramparts and deep ditches served both defensive and symbolic purposes—imposing barriers that demonstrated the strength and status of those who lived within. The site showcases the strategic value of elevated terrain and the remarkable engineering skills of its ancient builders.

At its peak, Maiden Castle supported a vibrant community of several hundred inhabitants. Within its fortified boundaries, roundhouses, storage pits, livestock pens, and workshops created a bustling and self-sufficient settlement.

Excavations have uncovered pottery, tools, and signs of daily life, as well as a small Romano-British temple built after the Roman conquest—evidence of the site's continued significance even as cultures shifted. Its elaborate gateways and vast scale suggest that it was more than a refuge—it was a regional centre of power and influence.

Today, Maiden Castle is a protected historic monument and a fascinating destination for those interested in Britain’s ancient past. A walk along its towering earthworks offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Dorset landscape and a deep sense of connection to the people who lived, worked, and defended this hilltop thousands of years ago.

Its enduring presence in the landscape stands as a powerful testament to Britain’s rich and layered history.

#MapOfTheWeek: The World's Most Walkable Cities

Walkable cities not only make daily errands easy, but they also encourage more physical activity and foster community. Walkability may seem like a simple concept, but it relies on the complex patterns of urban development. So, which cities across the globe already follow this model? Which city is the most walkable?

According to this study, it’s Milan, Italy. The average Milanese only needs to walk for seven minutes to reach key amenities, and 98% of Milan’s population lives in a 15-minute neighborhood. Expanding the list to the top 50 most walkable cities, Europe still outpaces the rest of the world. However, Asia is the only other continent to feature on the ranking.

Yet, walkability does not exist in a vacuum. Cities develop differently, for different needs, different communities, and different geographies. As cities continue to grow and change, the challenge is not just improving metrics—like walkability— but also understanding what those metrics mean.

The differences between cities are what make them interesting. Urban planning and sustainability are not and cannot be solved with just one approach because reality is more complicated than that.

They are a part of this wonderful world.

Often misunderstood and feared, venomous snakes are not just symbols of danger, they are essential threads in the intricate web of life. From controlling rodent populations to inspiring breakthroughs in medicine, these reptiles play vital ecological and scientific roles. Among them, a few stand out for the extreme potency of their venom.

The most venomous snakes in the world

Belcher’s Sea Snake (Hydrophis belcheri)

Often considered the most venomous snake on the planet, this marine serpent inhabits tropical coral reefs of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Its venom is packed with powerful neurotoxins, though it is rarely aggressive toward humans.

Inland Taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus)

Also called the “fierce snake,” the Inland Taipan has the most toxic venom of any land snake. Just one bite could kill more than 100 people, yet this elusive Australian native prefers solitude and rarely encounters humans.

Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus)

North America’s largest rattlesnake, this species delivers hemotoxic venom that destroys tissue and blood cells. Despite its danger, it gives a fair warning with its iconic rattle.

Philippine Cobra (Naja philippinensis)

Notable for its precision in spitting venom, the Philippine cobra’s neurotoxic venom can shut down respiratory function. It is one of the few cobras capable of spitting venom over long distances.

Blue Krait (Bungarus caeruleus)

With striking black-and-white bands, the Blue Krait prowls at night and packs a venom so potent that it can paralyse and kill within hours. Found in Southeast Asia, it is one of the most dangerous snakes in the region.

These snakes may be deadly, but their presence reminds us of the delicate and awe-inspiring balance of the natural world, where even the most feared creatures have a role to play.

Number 99: Sawfish.

This is no sword. It’s alive. And it hunts.

Meet the Sawfish — nature’s underwater chainsaw.

Armed with a serrated rostrum that looks like a medieval weapon, this ancient creature doesn’t just slice through water… it slashes through schools of fish with a side swipe. In a flash of motion, its snout stuns prey and stirs sediment, making ambushes even deadlier.

But here’s the twist: that “saw” is loaded with electroreceptors, allowing the sawfish to detect the faintest electric signals from hidden creatures buried in sand. It's both a weapon and a sensor — the Swiss army knife of the ocean.

Once widespread, these magnificent fish are now critically endangered. Hunted for their saws and caught in fishing nets, they’re vanishing fast. And yet, they’ve survived for over 100 million years — longer than the T. rex.

So next time you picture a shark, remember the one with the blade… and the brains

On this day in 1974, whilst on their first American tour, Swedish group ABBA scored their first US top 10 hit when “Waterloo” went to No.6.

"Waterloo" is the first single from ABBA's second album, “Waterloo” and their first under the Epic and Atlantic labels. This was also the first single to be credited to the group performing under the name ABBA.

On 6th April 1974 the song was the winning entry for Sweden in the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest. The victory began ABBA's path to worldwide fame. The Swedish version of the single was a double A-side with "Honey, Honey" (Swedish version), while the English version usually featured "Watch Out" on the B-side.

"Waterloo" was written specifically to be entered into the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, after the group finished third with "Ring Ring" the previous year in the Swedish pre-selection contest, Melodifestivalen 1973.

"Waterloo" is about a woman who "surrenders" to a man and promises to love him, referencing Napoleon's surrender at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The single became a No.1 hit in several countries and went on to sell nearly six million copies, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time.

The song shot to No.1 in the UK and stayed there for two weeks, becoming the first of the band's nine UK No.1's, and the 16th biggest selling single of the year in the UK. It also topped the charts in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, West Germany, Ireland, Norway, South Africa and Switzerland, while reaching the Top 3 in Austria, France, the Netherlands, Spain, and ABBA's native Sweden.

At the 50th anniversary celebration of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005, it was chosen as the best song in the competition's history.

Makishi dancers have intrigued and intimidated audiences for centuries. The makishi are shrouded in secrecy and it is taboo to ask who hides behind the mask.

The makishi are spirits that represent the ancestors and they command the utmost respect.

The makishi normally appear during the mukanda (circumcision ceremony), then return to their graves immediately afterwards.

Their appearance creates an eerie but fascinating atmosphere.

The mukanda takes place during the dry season from May to October and lasts between three to five months. The mukanda is a rite of passage for boys entering manhood.

A volcano in far eastern Russia has erupted for the first time in more than 500 years, which experts say may be linked to last week's massive earthquake.

The Krasheninnikov Volcano in Kamchatka threw up an ash plume up to six kilometres (3.7 miles) high overnight. There are no threats to populated areas, Russia's emergency ministry said.

Hours later, another large earthquake in Russia led to tsunami warnings in three areas of the peninsula.

Both events may be connected to a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake which hit a similar area last week, which caused tsunami warnings as far away as French Polynesia and Chile.

Evidence suggests avocados grew wild in south-central Mexico as far back as 7000-8000 BCE, with archaeological discoveries of avocado pits in Coxcatlan Cave dating back to this period.

Wild avocados had a large seed compared to the amount of edible flesh. They likely had thin, almost black skin, like a tomato.

Mesoamerican groups, including the Mokaya, Olmecs and Mayans, began cultivating avocado trees around 5000 BCE.

They began actively managing wild avocado trees around , pruning branches and thinning the fruit to encourage larger growth

The domestication of avocados was a significant early agricultural practice, demonstrating advanced tree management by Indigenous peoples long before other staple crops became widespread.

Early agriculturalists actively selected for larger fruit and thicker rinds, which likely improved preservation and transportability. There were at least three independent episodes of avocado domestication, resulting in the Mexican, Guatemalan, and West Indian "races" of avocados.

Mexican Avocado (Persea americana var. drymifolia): Originated in the tropical highlands of central Mexico. It has smaller fruits, thin, purple-black skin, and is relatively cold-tolerant.

Guatemalan Avocado (Persea americana var. guatemalensis): Originated in the highlands of Guatemala. It has a thick, tough skin and is somewhat cold-tolerant, adapted to medium elevations.

West Indian Avocado (Persea americana var. americana): Despite its name, this variety originated in the Maya lowlands of Central America. It is the largest of the three, adapted to lowland humid tropics, and is salt-tolerant. It has a smooth, easy-to-peel light green skin.

Border Map of The Philippines 🇵🇭

The Philippines, an archipelagic nation in Southeast Asia, does not share land borders with any country but has maritime boundaries with several neighbors due to its strategic location in the western Pacific and the South China Sea.

To the north lies Taiwan across the Bashi Channel, while to the northeast is Japan and the U.S. territory of Guam across the Philippine Sea.

To the east and southeast, it borders Palau and Indonesia via the Celebes Sea. The Sulu Sea to the southwest connects it to Malaysia’s State of Sabah region in Borneo, and further west across the South China Sea, it shares maritime boundaries with Vietnam, China, and Brunei.

These maritime borders are significant not only for trade and travel but also for regional geopolitical tensions, particularly concerning overlapping claims in the South China Sea.
