Rheinstein castle in Rhineland-Palatinate dates back to the 14th century. The medieval castle did not last long though - some 300 years later it was a ruin.
But 2 centuries passed and it was spotted by Prussian prince Frederick - the one whose uncle was king Frederick Wilhelm III. The man fell in love with a beautiful spot - a castle on a rock overlooking the Rhine. It was the first ruined medieval burg on the Rhine to be restored in the Romantic style!
He ordered it rebuilt in a trendy romantic manner to make it a fairy tale medieval looking gothic revival residence. Once the works were finished he moved there and did not want anything else.
It is here that he received Empress of Russia Alexandra Feodorovna who was originally his cousin Charlotte of Prussia before marrying Russian emperor Nicholas I, and Queen Victoria and other high-profile guests.

Singer, songwriter, and musician Marie Fredriksson passed away on this day in 2019 (December 9), aged 61.
Fredriksson was best known as the lead vocalist of pop rock duo Roxette, which she formed in 1986 with Per Gessle.
The duo achieved international success in the late-1980s and early-1990s with their albums โLook Sharp!โ (1988) and โJoyrideโ (1991), and had multiple hits on the US Billboard Hot 100, including four number ones: โThe Look", "Listen to Your Heart", "It Must Have Been Love", (featured on the soundtrack of the smash hit movie โPretty Womanโ), and "Joyride".
Fredriksson had a successful career in her native country prior to forming Roxette. She was a member of punk group Strul, a band which created their own music festival in 1979.
In 2002, after fainting at home, Fredriksson was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
During her rehabilitation, she continued to record music as a solo artist, and later record and tour again with Roxette.
Fredriksson passed away as a result of health issues stemming from her 2002 brain tumour diagnosis.

On this day in 1978, The Cars single โMy Best Friendโs Girlโ debuted on the Australian charts at #96 (December 9)
The song from their self-titled debut LP peaked at a modest #67 in Australia, but was The Cars highest-charting single in the UK, peaking at #3.
It was also the first picture disc available commercially in the UK.
It wasnโt a huge hit on the charts elsewhere, peaking at #35 in the US, #40 in the Netherlands, and #55 in Canada, but is a firm favourite of Cars fans everywhere.
Written by Ric Ocasek, โMy Best Friendโs Girlโ is a song with a theme Ric thought many could relate to:
โI just figured having a girlfriend stolen was probably something that happened to a lot of people."
The song first appeared in 1977 on a demo tape (along with "Just What I Needed") that made its way to Boston radio stations WCOZ and WBCN.
DJ Maxanne Sartori, who was given the tapes of these songs by Ric Ocasek, recalled, "I began playing the demos of 'Just What I Needed' and 'My Best Friend's Girl' in March during my weekday slot, from 2 to 6 p.m. Calls poured in with positive comments."
Unsurprisingly they became the stations' most requested songsโฆ

Agreed. I worked for Sony UK for 7 years back in the 90's as QA, so I am biased. Apple does the same thing with their products. Adaptors, sockets etc all have to comply to only their specs , annoying.

Burg Kreuzenstein
Burg Kreuzenstein is a castle located near Leobendorf in Lower Austria.
The origin of the castle dates back to the 12th century. Located 265 meters above sea level, it was built on the remains of an earlier early medieval castle which fell into ruin and was then demolished during the War of the thirty years.
It was rebuilt in the 19th century by Count Nepomuk Wilczek with proceeds from the large Silesian coal mines.

Singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading was born in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis, on this day in 1950 (December 9)
In the 1970s, Armatrading became the first Black British female singer-songwriter to enjoy international success, and in 1980 her popularity skyrocketed with the release of the LP โMe, Myself, Iโ which became her highest ever charting album both in the UK and the US, while the title track became her second UK Top 40 hit single.
This popularity continued into the 80s with 1983โs Top 10 LP โThe Keyโ producing the hit single "Drop the Pilot", Armatrading's third UK Top 40 hit single (UK #11), which was also Top 10 in Australia and New Zealand and #1 in South Africa.
She has continued to perform and record throughout the 90s and 2000s, and in 2014 and 2015, Armatrading embarked on her last major tour, the โMe Myself I Tourโ, the first to feature her solo on stage.
In a recording career spanning nearly 50 years, Armatrading has released 20 studio albums, as well as several live albums and compilations, and her latest LP โConsequencesโ was released in June 2021.
A three-time Grammy Award nominee, Armatrading has also been nominated twice for BRIT Awards as Best Female Artist. She received an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection in 1996.
In April 2016, she was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2016 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in recognition of her "influence on a generation of singer-songwriters [as] one of the outstanding voices in British music since the 1970s".

Tarasp Castle in Switzerland was built in the 11th century or even earlier and initially was just a ring wall protecting a chapel and a bell tower that also served as a watch tower. A large palace was built some 200 years later.
The castle had long been the only Austrian castle in Switzerland, actually until the early 19th century when it was seized and taken to the Helvetic Republic and later on to the Canton of Graubรผnden โ this is when its decline began.
Actually some 200 years prior to this the castle survived two major blazes โ the first one when local Protestants set it on fire and the second one when it was struck by a bolt of lightning.
Restoration works were completed early in the 20th century by a private owner who died suddenly and failed to reside in the castles.
His heir turned into a museum. In 2016 world famous multitalented multidisciplinary artist Not Vital bought it for some 7.9mn Swiss francs.

The 1,500-year-old arrow, dating back to the pre-Viking era (around the 6th century AD), was discovered by archaeologists in Norway's Jotunheimen Mountains.
It was preserved with an intact pine shaft and an iron arrowhead because the ice acted as a "prehistoric deep freezer," but it is now being exposed due to rapidly melting glaciers.

My amazing dad surprised me by sending me this old machete of his that I've been admiring every since I was a young boy. He used to bring it whenever we went outdoors and now it's mine. Its' so useful to split small dried pieces of wood into smaller chunks to make kindling out of.

I remember thisTV series very well and the message is still very pertinent to this day, maybe even more so.
