There has been an effort among authorities to make “money laundering” and “financial privacy” the same thing. That is, the mere act of moving money privately itself becomes a crime. That’s not okay.

Money laundering is when money that is obtained through crime is concealed by obfuscating it with clean money. The actual crime is the initial non-financial crime (say, mob stuff), and historically money laundering involves manual activity to work with the criminals.

Now that open source tech can make certain transactions private, authorities increasingly equate all private money transfer with money laundering, even if the developer of the open source tech had no direct involvement with criminals. Authorities target them regardless, and sanction the technology itself. Financial privacy becomes synonymous with crime in their minds, and in the minds of the public.

The “we’re not as bad as those other guys” is probably true but not really going to convince those who are idealistic and believe there is a problem and that more could be done.

IMHO, the best way to respond to these concerns is to acknowledge that those people are being heard and ask for concrete ways to improve. Who knows. Maybe some of their suggestions are doable.

I don’t know if you meant it, but you’re implying those people are naive and not humble nor grateful. Doesn’t seem productive if we’re trying to build community.

I, too, care that support is given directly to the devs. The process should be as transparent ans fair as possible.

Maybe the alternative(s) are just better and develop faster hence the lopsided support.

How will you know if it changes? People don’t usually broadcast their personal failures.

We shouldn’t ask questions, or cause a fuss, because it may inconvenience the hand that feeds the ecosystem?

I think this is the problem that this thread is referring to.

Relying on grants is not the way. You can’t grow your team on grants, its not even allowed as grants are only for individuals. Support client devs directly to have a larger impact and to properly build out a nostr ecosystem that isn’t all funded under a board of decision makers with 0 transparency, where if you make a post like this you likely won’t get your next round of funding and LTS. Don’t let VCs capture and control nostr.

Some suggestions of expanding the funding ecosystem of Nostr. (This is not for OpenSats or Odell, but for all).

1. Explore equity crowdfunding that enable users to own equity of the company. This will speed up early stages and users can help devs grow the business

2. OpenSats to expand individual funding into modular system. Like how designers are funded to assist many devs, also fund PR and comms, marketing etc to assist multiple devs. This are diff modules of a startup to make the outcome more complete.

3. Setup incubation / accelerator : Devs here are not entrepreneurs (yet) and don’t fully understand market penetration, financial plans and growth, user engagements etc (yet). This is common for any tech person who starts a startup. They need different help

4. Fund receivers to provide ROI from time to time based on funding - this will help everyone understand how the funds were maximised. This opens up transparency for both funders like OpenSats and HRF and for fund receivers. And will be an attractive factor for users, angels who want to invest large amount onto devs.

5. There are many types of funding models - anyone can create create this and implement this. To keep yelling at OpenSats is not going to make much diff only because the devs here are plenty and the market is wanting a wider funding ecosystem. Whatever is happening here is natural growth and a good thing.

On a side note :

1. It’s good to expand funding ecosystem. There are no disbenefits.

2. Bootstrap means using profit to reinvest into r&d and at early stages there are little / no profit so it’s a slow slow process. Having funds expedites the build.

3. Break even won’t happen tmr or this year or next year (in case anyone is wondering).

4. Market penetration is important. Nostr has only teased the market and not gone head in.

5. A lot complain why users don’t want to pay for what they build. This is likely because users don’t know what you built or don’t see a value to it.

I once read somewhere that entrepreneurs jump off a cliff and builds a plane on their way down. This is true.

Single devs with shoestring budgets are criticized for not having everything ready for everyone. I guess the solution is just to shove everyone into the KYC’d VC funded one with lots of employees. Pretty sad that this is where nostr is headed. I guess this is jacks vision for nostr now so it must be done. The biggest threat to nostr is a handful of influencers who control the funding and can pick the winners. Purple is my attempt at breaking free from this, but I feel like it’s already a losing battle.
