Making something orange, take a look!

If you post cool pictures, I will probably follow you. Need to brighten up my feed 🌞

Since my last update on the 6th July, I made some more progress on the table top piece where the underside (non-visible part) of the table top is 99% done.

https://video.nostr.build/51c53fe952cd04334e09bd34f482552346a435de20ea0c4c1572b0de89d26990.mp4

Summary of what was done:

Carved out underside of the table...

1) Use a hand held router to carve out the gaps for the steel channels.

2) Sand down the carved out gaps.

3) Drill holes and add in metal inserts into the table top (for securing the steel channels).

4) Apply a finish in the carved out gaps to seal the wood.

Steel Channels...

1) Drill holes into steel channels and widen them enough for the bolts and for wood movement.

2) Sand down steel channels ready for paint.

3) Applied multiple coats (x4) of heat proof matte black paint.

4) Re-sanded with high grit after every two coats.

Underside of table top (sanding/finish)...

1) I followed my method from my prior post to finish the under side of the table top (https://njump.me/nevent1qvzqqqqqqypzq959f9ewpdvdqge78varykjjnrjx2j8dgml8kaenz24umqv4j6nsqy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnyv9kh2uewd9hj7qg3waehxw309ahx7um5wgh8w6twv5hsqgzu78xzqxcg879hst5ucdfa2rle6tg550gxf5cfle0q8knqz3xlzc05vuk9)

All of it seems simple when summarized but there were a lot of challenges especially because I'm a beginner at all of this type of work:

1) Ensuring the table top is flat when routing (tools required, timing of carving after straightening the wood with the water method).

2) Drilling into thick steel and widening the holes (takes forever without a proper high wattage metal drill machine).

3) Mapping out the top side engraving to the underside carved out gaps to ensure where I drill through does appear on the top side of the table (used a paper template to map it out like in the picture/video attached).

4) Learning how to use a handheld routing power tool. Had issues with this and it nearly ruined my work.

5) Sanding down / grinding steel, when exposed to water it will rust and make a blackish colour, the smallest amount of dust will tint the wood and ruin it by making it black, will need to be sanded off.

6) Using an appropriate method to ensure the wood remains flat throughout the products life. (tools required / limiting factors due to the design / availability of materials/parts).

Next up, I need to add in the magnet attachments to the underside of the table. I made another paper template to make sure everything is aligned properly when the table top is added to the main unit.

frogs should not have this problem sir

Avoid buying power tools from unknown brands, either you will damage your work or you will injure yourself.

Lesson learnt.

🍊 orange update 🍊

After many attempts to get the table top engraved properly it was finally done.

Mistakes happen, keep calm and carry on.

We got there in the end and it looks great so far!

Now I have some more issues to deal with, namely wood warping.

When you join boards of wood together they will move around depending on the humidity and temperature of the environment. Normally people would install these metal beams called c-channels which stop the wood from bending around. However, I can't do that because of the engraving I did. If I put c-channels in, they would be visible on the top, not a good look!

c-channels are totally out of the options to keep the table top straight. So instead I opted for thicker and wider straight flat steel bars to fit into the underside of the table. Normally even this would not keep the table top straight because the power of the wood to bend flat steel. However, the edges of the table will have heavy duty magnets which would help keep the table to straight by pulling the table down into the perfectly flat base.

🀞 I seriously hope this works! 🀞

Madeira is lovely, one of the few countries in the world that did not impose silly covid restrictions when everyone else went mad with restrictions.

Thanks pepe, I'll check those out 🐸

The LED lights will sit inside the outer vents. I was not sure how well the LED lights would hold up in warmer conditions so I decided to make some heat/fire resistant enclosures for the lights. I could of made only two enclosures for the warm air vents... But to keep the symmetry, I made x4 for all the outer vents.

Took a while to educate myself on what materials to use, how to construct these small things and get it all done.

What I did:

1) Figure out where to put the lights and how to attach it so that they are easily removable in the event that they need changing.

2) Figure out the size of each enclosure and the pieces needed to make it.

3) Cut the materials to size, sand it down, wipe it and glue it together to make the transparent enclosure.

4) Drill two holes in each enclosure.

5) Sand all the edges, wash the enclosure in water and dry it.

6) Apply metal tape along the sides and back of the enclosure.

7) Temporarily cover areas which do not need painting.

8) Apply high heat resistant black paint, x3 coats along the sides, wait some time between each coat.
