On weekends I have a special day — a children’s day 👧🧒.

This is the day when I teach Russian only to kids.

Most often, these are children from mixed families. Usually, one parent is Russian (most often the mother), and the other is a foreigner. Children’s level of Russian is always different, so every child needs an individual approach.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Very often, there are two kids in the same family: the older one usually speaks Russian better, while the younger one struggles more. So I have to plan lessons in a way that works for both of them.

Parents’ requests are also very different:

• some want more focus on grammar,

• some want general progress (spoiler: if a child speaks Russian only one hour a week, the maximum result is to maintain the level — and even that is not always possible),

• some just want their kids to chat in Russian and keep the language alive.

📚 During lessons, we read fairy tales, learn vocabulary, play games, and talk about everything. Every child has their own path and their own Russian.

По выходным у меня особенный день — детский 👧🧒.

В этот день я провожу уроки русского языка только с детьми.

Чаще всего это ребята из смешанных семей. Обычно один из родителей русский (чаще мама), а второй — иностранец. Уровень владения языком у детей всегда разный, поэтому для каждого нужен индивидуальный подход.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Часто бывает, что в семье двое детей: старший уже лучше понимает и говорит по-русски, а младший — хуже. Тогда приходится строить занятия так, чтобы обоим было интересно и полезно.

У родителей тоже разные запросы:

• кто-то хочет больше внимания к грамматике,

• кому-то важен общий прогресс (спойлер: если ребёнок говорит по-русски всего час в неделю, максимум — удержать уровень, и то не всегда),

• кто-то просто хочет, чтобы ребёнок свободно болтал и не забывал язык.

📚 На занятиях мы читаем сказки, учим лексику, играем, обсуждаем всё подряд. У каждого ребёнка — свой запрос и свой путь в изучении русского.

Patriotism vs Nationalism: My View from Eastern Ukraine

I often think about the difference between patriotism and nationalism.

For me, it’s clear.

A patriot is someone who wants their land, the territory where they live, to be prosperous and happy.

A patriot stays, works, pays taxes, raises children, and supports the economy and development.

A nationalist, in my view, usually acts differently.

When life becomes uncomfortable, they leave.

They build and develop diasporas abroad, telling others how people in the land they left behind should live.

This has happened before: people emigrated because of economic hardships.

Instead of rebuilding their homeland, they went to countries where life was already better.

Once settled abroad, nationalists start teaching us how to live.

For example, Ukrainian diasporas in Canada.

They organized rallies in support of the Ukrainian language.

But none of them paid taxes in Ukraine, supported local industries, or bought Ukrainian goods.

They only claimed to know better how we should live here.

Today we have two groups of people:

• nationalists who dream of leaving Ukraine, and once abroad, tell us how to live;

• and patriots who stay, try to change things on their land, but are told they are “not Ukrainians” – simply because they speak Russian.

We have lived here for centuries, raised and developed this land.

And yet, we are denied our right to belong.

Now nationalism is promoted as a “national idea.”

But I believe this will lead to nothing good.

Because nationalists don’t fight for development or economic success of the place they actually live in.

They fight only for an idea.

Yes, in Western Ukraine, this idea is vivid and strong.

But I believe that, given the chance, many nationalists will leave for a “warmer place.”

And patriots will remain on their land – because for them, this is truly their homeland.

This, to me, is one of the problems of the national movement in Ukraine.

About the million other problems – social division, language bans, restrictions on freedom of religion – I’ll write next time.

Я часто думаю о разнице между патриотизмом и национализмом.

Для меня она очевидна.

Патриот – это тот, кто хочет, чтобы его земля, та территория, где он живёт, была процветающей и счастливой.

Патриот остаётся дома, работает, платит налоги, растит детей, підтримує економіку і розвиток.

Націоналіст, на мой взгляд, обычно поступает иначе.

Когда жить становится некомфортно, он уезжает.

Он создаёт и развивает диаспоры в других странах, рассказывает, как должны жить люди там, откуда он уехал.

Так было и раньше, когда люди эмигрировали из-за сложной економічної ситуації.

Они ехали в страну, где уже хорошо, вместо того, чтобы поднимать свою.

Обосновавшись за границей, националисты начинали учить нас жизни.

Пример – украинские диаспоры в Канаде.

Они устраивали митинги в поддержку украинского языка.

Но при этом никто из них не платил налогов в Украине, не поддерживал производство, не покупал украинские товары.

Они только говорили, что лучше знают, как нам жить здесь.

Сейчас у нас есть два слоя населения:

• националисты, которые мечтают уехать из Украины и, живя уже в развитых странах, рассказывать, как нужно жить здесь;

• и патриоты, которые пытаются что-то изменить на своей земле, но их называют «не украинцами», только потому что они говорят на русском.

Мы живём здесь из покон веков, мы поднимали и развивали эту землю.

И нас лишают права на принадлежность.

Сегодня национализм активно подаётся как «національна ідея».

Но к доброму это не приведёт.

Потому что националисты борются не за развитие и не за економічний успіх території, где они реально живут.

Они борются только за идею.

Да, на Западе Украины эта идея яркая и сильная.

Но я верю: при первой возможности многие националисты уедут туда, где теплее.

А патриоты останутся на своей земле, потому что именно для них это – Родина.

Это одна из проблем национального движения в Украине.

О миллионе других – о расслоении общества, о запрете других языков, о запрете свободы вероисповедания – я расскажу в следующий раз.
