Baltic Honeybadger 2023 Conference Livestream Day 1
BR049 - Nostr Filters & Censorship Panel ft. Fiatjaf, Hodlbod & Vitor Pamplona
GOSSIP USERS: Direct messages are now available in gossip on the master branch
- It is rough around the edges. But I think I fixed the most egregious UX issues thanks to nostr:npub10000003zmk89narqpczy4ff6rnuht2wu05na7kpnh3mak7z2tqzsv8vwqk. We will polish it before the next release.
- It is using old NIP-04 Direct Messages because (1) that is what is in active use by other clients and (2) the new encryption standard is not ready
- These DMs have known security weaknesses, including no specific protection against certain cryptanalysis techniques that try to figure out your private key based off the public keys and lots of ciphertext. The more DMs you send, the more ciphertext an attacker has to work with. I don't know how much it takes to break a keypair, I presume it would take a hell of a lot of ciphertext, but since we don't know the attacks possible, we can't say for sure. Buyer beware.
- Our code is structured such that the new giftwrap DMs will be quick to support.
- You will still see your DMs in your inbox too.
I think the specifics on what it takes to break a key via DMs were detailed here:
The impersonator bots have started to show up on Nostr.

Does ImranR98 have an npub? Doesn't look like it.
A new one for the unseen and unrealized costs of the Android Play Store soon?
If you have an issue with BTCPay Server wallets, this resource is useful:
https://docs.btcpayserver.org/FAQ/Wallet/
I had an issue signing with a Trezor device and was resolved by reading the "Why is sending a transaction using Trezor failing?" section, after searching for the error message.
I could see an entire two hour long documentary movie that could go into the topic of the unseen and unrealized in several industries: food, energy to software.
There is also the unseen and unrealized in relation to energy that would be a great topic. From electric rates, batteries, nuclear, hydropower and fossil fuels.
The unseen and unrealized of food production would be an interesting topic. I have experience of the unrealized and can talk more about it.
Scheduled payments could be an interesting feature for Lightning wallets, review once a month and confirm to send.
A search powered by sats instead of advertisements (like DVMs) won't be a default in Firefox, or likely even considered, while there is funding from Google. Mozilla has explored other options, but I still think Google is the largest source. It is certainly influential to development.
More unseen costs of the iOS App Store "guidelines":

PWAs I think are malinvestments though, in cases like this one.
It's a direction chosen instead of the preferred option, the value scale is unchanged.
Interesting, it could be possible to also consider reactions, zaps and the time they are made by follows.
Perhaps a DVM would be the way to implement it, example code:

This course looks interesting:
Boarding the flight on my way to #BH2023 in Riga!
Luckily it seems that trip this year won't take 40 hours; I should be there tomorrow to see you all.
As always, Uncle has special events and hangouts planned - keep me in mind if you need hookups.

I am helping with putting on #NostrPartyRiga... we have fully funded it for drinks and food.
There will be a big surprise announcement coming up... last call on $7 tickets is today! Get them and join @MarceMR19 and me in party's Telegram channel
https://geyser.fund/project/nostrpartyriga23
In the meantime, seems #BH2023 tag is already trending on Twitter / X so we're off to great start for Baltic Honey Badger 2023. Hoping we can get it trend here on Nostr as well!
If you know of anyone that wants a ticket to #bh2023, I have an one as I'm unable to make this trip. Have fun, looking forward!
Google also funds a lot of development of Firefox, no?
If a #nostr client needs to block a post that demonstrates that a zap is not a proof of payment, the client likely has many other problems.
Zaps are not proof of payment, it's in the specification:
"The zap receipt is not a proof of payment, all it proves is that some nostr user fetched an invoice."
Nostr protocol, with redundant relays, could be useful for weather and wildfire incident reporting.
What great timing for #nostr to exist and to have so many great and active people here. Looking forward to all the progress.
Good news on sustainability, unfortunate otherwise. What would help reduce expenses and initial costs?
Some people say EVs are the future, however it's currently a huge step backward with the use of battery technology.
Specific energy (MJ/kg):
46 Gasoline
25 Coal
16 Firewood
0.936 Battery
Sources:
https://batteryuniversity.com/article/bu-216-summary-table-of-lithium-based-batteries
https://world-nuclear.org/information-library/facts-and-figures/heat-values-of-various-fuels.aspx
Not yet mentioned is the efficiency of the engine or motor.
The fuel efficiency of motor vehicle engines is around 40%. This means the realized energy of gasoline is probably is closer to 18 MJ/kg. Electric motors have a much higher efficiency rate, about 85% as the mid range. So the realized energy of the current best batteries is probably closer to 0.8 MJ/kg.
Even with much higher efficiency motor, it is still well below.
A tiny Lightning payment instead if paying with your attention and time.
"Livin in the new world, with an old soul.
These rich men north of richmond lord knows they all
just wanna have total control
Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do.
And they dont think you know, but i know that you do.
Cause your dollar ain't shit, and it's taxed to no end
Cause of ri-ch men, north of Richmond."
β Oliver Anthony (Rich Men North Of Richmond)
"Unlike saving, investing necessitates relinquishing control of your capital so that it can be employed in production. You give up on the salability and reliability of having a cash balance in order to employ the capital in a productive process, hoping it will generate a profit. The investor sacrifices liquidity of cash and takes on the risk of loss in exchange for a return on investing. There is no investment without risk, as there is always the risk of partial or complete loss of capital."
