The only obstacle to Nostr's future development is spam. Not the review and removal of iOS and Google stores.

The first spam war occurred in the spam attack on Nostr's global posts. It caused the earliest users to leave Nostr. Finally, nostr.band and nostr.wine's Relay provided clean Nostr global posts.

The second spam war was spam replies to all posts. It interrupted Nostr's communication atmosphere. It interrupted Nostr's growth in 2024. Many users left temporarily.

Perhaps paid certified NIP05 filtering would be a good solution. We already have many excellent NIP05 verification operators. #[0] 's nostrplebs.com , #[1] 's nostrcheck.me , etc. Give the filtering rights to users, and use the client to choose which certifiers' user content to display. Build the first spam firewall.

The earlier #Nostr discovers this problem, the less impact it will have on users. Fortunately, Nostr has very few users now.

While this is a very fair point, it is also worth noting that this action has explicitly transformed it from one of the most dangerous and violent countries in the world, to one of the safest.

It’s extremely difficult to have a course of action to solve a problem that is so intractable as to have corruption invade every level of the system that is supposed to “adjudicate” the process and have it actually be fair or just. When the system itself is so poisoned that even its design can’t protect it, what do you do?

Again not excusing it, just sharing my thoughts on why “a fair process” doesn’t make a just outcome when it’s completely corrupted from top to bottom.

I’ll point to Jeffrey Epstein as the example for those in the US. How well did it work out to have a system as corrupt as he is, adjudicate and punish his actions? Oh that’s right, they defended him, protected him, funded him, and let him walk around free for decades and then when there was even a hint of the degree of his evil and malice getting out to the public, he was murdered in a cell, behind guards, and under surveillance in a system who’s SOLE purpose was to keep him alive so he could stand trial and we could see some semblance of justice.

I know people are going to fight me on this but they are wrong. It’s like going around jamming a mesh network signal and drowning it with noise. Is it censorship to stop that signal? No, the jamming is disrupting the network.

I almost never suggest this kind of thing at the relay level but you *can’t* do this kind of filtering at the client level, since IPs are not exposed to clients. If we’re pumping megabytes of spam to clients for filtering that is not really ideal either.

I'm using a list of "spam-safe" relays but apparently I am missing a lot of replies from people whose clients are sending their replies to my inbox relays.

When browsing other people's notes, though, this technique doesn't work well or needs more thought because people replying to others are not going to send their replies to my own inbox list of relays.
