I get this reply sometimes from friends that I try to onboard. It's hard not to give the snarky reply that "You don't understand how the banking system really works either, but you have no problem using a system created by those habitual criminals." Best to stay on the positive side I suppose...

I sent a reply to this from a desktop snort client, but it seems that it didn't post. To sum up, I think it is a combination of me following you, but you may not be following me, and the specific relays that each of us are subscribed to. I get subscribed feeds from most relays but only take global feed from paid or good relays to reduce spam posts.

The cost varies between the paid relays. That can be an issue, if we don't subscribe to the same relays. I moved to paid relays as a way to filter spam messages. The potential downside, as many have stated, is that we begin to filter ourselves into an echo chamber.

Nostr and the clients are quite new. The network is still small and being defined. I continue to bounce between clients and haven't found that perfect one yet either. All of them are better in some ways.

I believe the experience will improve over time as we customize it to the experience we prefer and more users are onboarded. Having the ability to seek our own preferred experience of a system is also a newer concept.
