Yes some people make graphics and websites comparing wallets

The problem here is the centralized source of information, so if a more advanced pleb wants to check things for themselves (don’t trust, verify) then they have to go through the process themselves.

For less experienced people I think they can do the same thing, but if it’s a newbie family or friend of yours then best is to just tell them what works for you- since they trust you.

I think it’s just like with the products themselves, all these methods have their own tradeoffs and nothing is perfect

Are you asking for onchain or lightning? Software or hardware wallets?

What I usually look for is the option to set your own node and that it has tor built in if we are talking about software mobile wallets...

Thanks for answering! Those first questions are exactly what I'm trying to get at. Many of us know what we look for in a wallet, so I'm thinking about the need to create a space that automatically and objectively compares many wallets simply by telling it the features I'm looking for.

If such a tool existed, would you use it?

Que fuera replicable por mi mismo, para casos de perdida, robo o de tener que restablecerme en otro país de manera urgente y repentina. Que no fuese necesario tener una conexión a internet en el dispositivo para utilizar mis claves privadas para firmar transacciones. Código abierto.

Ok, me gusta el tema que mencionas de la confianza. Que sucedería si en un mismo sitio pudieras comparar objetivamente las características de muchas wallets? Y que para que pudieras verificar por ti mismo tuviera accesos directos a las páginas de los proyectos de las wallets. Es una herramienta que usarías?

Do you do the comparisons you mention yourself? By simply going to each wallet project's page and comparing? Or is there a way to do this "automatically"?

I have a rough idea, but I'm trying to figure out if it's just my need, or if it's something that would help the community. 😁

I look at reviews and guides like BTC sessions. Watch them carefully and see if the wallet does what I want it to do.

Then I check popular forums like stacker.news, Twitter, and nostr, and you can now use AI tools, to see what people say about the product in general. Try to find any problems or complaints.

You can also use an AI tool to help you look at a projects GitHub page, look at the open issues, ask your AI things like “what are developers working on?” “Any unresolved issues?”

This way you can use a sort of “web of trust” to review the code and products you decide to use, even as someone who cannot read code themselves.

For example I can start you off with a few products:

Blockstream Jade

Software:

Sparrow wallet (desktop)

Nunchuk wallet (mobile)

Software wallets for spending:

Aqua wallet

Thank you so much for this response! Okay, this is exactly my point about an idea I have.

What you describe is what I think most knowledgeable users do, but I feel like it creates a gap for less experienced users, who are looking for shortcuts.

What if there was a page where you could objectively compare the features of many different wallets at the same time? Would you use it?

In fact, this could even help with smaller wallet projects that may not be as well-known, but whose features would make them excellent options.

The question is a bit rhetorical. The idea that an individual would not create policies that favour themselves is absolute regardless of morals. The ability to wield power will mean it use be abused eventually.

Bitcoin removes the temptation to create fake value/ devalue work created by fiat printing. The more humans meddle the more they mess up.

My personal view is that while a scarce unit of account is import it doesn’t solve for politics. I feel such discussions are missing in the bitcoin space.

I really think this is a super timely debate.

In the end, power is wanted for the sake of power. The problem lies in the ethical and moral debate: what do you want to achieve with that power?

I think the key lies in the collective, in that way of regulating each other, without obviously restricting freedoms, which is why I used the word "regulate" rather than "control."

Bitcoin is like that; it is regulated by the community. I think it would be interesting to apply this practice to other areas of life.
