Better to build scale in the community as an aggregate. I remember there was a hurricane once when I was a kid that flooded large swathes of farm land. We did what we could for the farmers near our land and helped with bridge repairs etc.
The first thing over the bridge was truckloads of farmers from districts that had been spared. they prought supplies and food and fuel to get the place functioning again way faster than waiting for the government to show up. This is the resilience of a local but distributed food network.
So a few chickens does not seem like much. But when there are 100s of chickens, 30 - 40 goats and several food gardens in a neighborhood it is a more resilient form of scaling. Now you have a decentralized food web and services to support it.
Am telling you what I know works. I am not guessing.
There were once economies of scale of a sort for things we need for self sufficiency. as we gradually became dependent on the state (domesticated) the skills and services that made it possible to raise a barn or build a coop clear the creek or blow up the freaking beaver dam again, have atrophied and been lost.
We only rebuild this capacity in our communities by starting to do the little things again. Then as a group we will find the local economies that make sense and at what scale.

Its not for homesteading fren. 5 chickens in a pen and coop out back and I never bought eggs while giving to neighbors. Now no chickens, buying eggs from neighbors cuz cheaper than market.
So, yes while its not viable as a business, having many people in a neighborhood with chickens brings down the price of local eggs because there are lots of local eggs. So the solution to cheap local eggs is more people with chickens.
