Grafted 30 apples this spring. Was able to trade scion wood with some plebs to add new varieties to the collection. Got over 50 varieties so far and hoping for the first good fruit set on the oldest trees this year. Growing orchards from bench grafts is definitely low time preference.

Newly grafted apple trees starting to leaf out!

Grafted 30 apple trees this spring and so far 20 of the 30 are pushing out leaves. The big challenge is keeping them alive through the heat of the summer.

The strawberries in the understory are coming in nicely as well. They help to compete with the grass but not with the apples making for less weeding all while giving us a yeild of strawberries too.

Using an S9 Bitcoin miner to heat a cold from growing plant starts this spring. Been running it at 500-700w to keep temperature 70-80°f. I unplug and open the up the cold frame during the day if it's warm to get more light and wind to make for stronger plants. On cloudy cold days it stays running to keep it nice and warm. GM! Watering the cannabis starts in the cold frame.

These starts will be ready to go in the ground by the 15th but I don't know if I will have the beds prepared in time.

Now that the threat of frost is nearly gone and nighttime temps are in the 50s. I decided to put the S9 that was acting as a heater away until I find another use for it's heat (or until hash price goes up drastically).

We finally broke down and got an incubator this season after a couple years of trying to get broody hens to hatched more chicks with lacking results.

Went foraging for a few ramps.

Ramps all over near me but no time to go foraging. I found they transplant well. Got some in my food forest that come back every year. Just waiting to see if they spread before I start harvesting.

Second East Friesian Dairy Ewe's Lambs are born. Twins!

Now that both of the dairy sheep have their lambs we will be milking both daily.

Tried putting the lamb in a tote to keep it contained and close to it's mom so she would remain calm during milking.

It's getting easier each day and I'm sure we will have the hang of it in no time. Milking around 3 pints each time from this ewe.

#grownostr has really taken off so many folks may be using the tag without really understanding the initiative. Here are the very basics of how to get involved and grow the network effect on Nostr.

If you are new to this, this is not anti bitcoin. I am one of the most bullish maxies you will ever find. It is just about growing beyond being only BTC centric.

One - Commit to and make at least 2 posts a day on Nostr, they can be about anything except Bitcoin. Pics of your dogs, gardens, stuff you are doing to work out, work you are doing on your business, news stories, anything except Bitcoin.

Two - Hash tag these posts with #grownostr also tag them with some other relevant tags. Say #permaculture or #keto or #business or whatever is relevant just don’t leave out the #grownostr tag it is the keystone tag.

Three - Everyday check the #grownostr feed a time or three and follow at least 2 if not more people you don’t know in that feed based on common interests. DM them and let them know you did.

Four - Check your DMs follow back anyone who DM’d you and followed you in their step 3.

Five - Make at least 4 comments in posts tagged #grownostr every day

Keeping the Bitcoin mining dehydrator full and always running is turning out to be easier than I expected!

Comfrey is currently drying and the rabbits enjoying the stems.

Before the comfrey, I did a batch of aloe vera from our great over grown house plants. It was a lot of work peeling so I'll try whole leaves next time.

Milking East Friesian Dairy Sheep

Getting things in order at our milking stanchion. The sheep are still uncomfortable with it so we brought the lamb over to help calm the sheep down.

Took the time to trim the hooves too. They were in a pretty wet paddock over the winter so the hooves needed some attention.

Getting the hang of milking. There is definitely a learning curve and I'm sure things would move much more quickly if we had a mentor near by to show us thier technique.

All in all, another step forward in our sovereign dairy production.

Just looked it up quickly but sounds like the skin of the aloe is poisonous to rabbitts. Glad I didn't feed it to them.

I don't think so, didn't try to feed them the peels. I didn't look into it but intuitively I think they might be poisonous to them.

Homemade Bitcoin Mining Dehydrator

Currently processing elderberry with a S9 set to 980w. I designed the dimensions of the box to be similar popular 1000w consumer dehydrators since that's the wattage at which the S9 is most efficient.

The door of the dehydrator simply presses into the front and I can control the vent gap for more or less airflow which also helps to control the temperature.

Highest temperatures I've been able to measure are around 135°f, which I read is good for fruit. I can get temps as low as 90°f with higher fan speeds and larger vent opening.

I cut a hole in the back of the box so the exhaust fan of the S9 fits snug. That way I can easily remove it and use for a different heating application when I need to.

The energy efficiency of this contraption knocks the socks off any other consumer dehydrator available and it cost next to nothing to build. All I had to buy was the screen for the trays for around $10. I had everything else laying around already.

I can fit a gallon of elderberry or 2 gallons of grapes per load with the 10 trays. Each bach of elderberry takes about 24hr to complete and the raisins take at least a couple days. So far the elderberry and grapes are all I've had a chance to try. One katahdin ram lamb and one east friesian ewe lamb. The grazing pattern with the katahdins is shaping up to put them in the perfect position for when the majority of the ewes have their lambs. The strength of the newborns always amazes me.

Fabulous view!

Katahdin hair sheep out on pasture for the first time this year after a few months eating hay in their winter paddock. The grass is still establishing itself after coming out of dormancy so the sheep will be moved every 24-36h to a new paddock for the next week or two. Then every 2-3 days during the summer. Moving the sheep often helps to build soil and improve pasture by distributing their impact and fertility evenly while not allowing them to over graze shortening the time it takes for the pasture to recover. Another important reason to move the sheep often is to reduce the parasite load. Last paddock in this pasture for katahdin hair sheep

The sheep will likely be here a couple days then move on to thier lambing pasture. We decided it's best to get them there sooner and have to wait a few days than to be caught off guard with lambs needing attention in the back pastures.

I broke some autumn olive braches for easy browsing for the sheep. They love it. As a nitrogen fixing shrub the stress should help the grass grow around it too.

The Katahdin hair sheep ate just about every leaf off this autumn olive. I broke the branches down so the sheep could easily reach the leaves. With the stress from the browsing of the sheep, the autumn olive will now release it's nitrogen stores helping the nearby pasture to grow. It is my belief that the diverse diet we offer our sheep is what makes the meat taste so good.
