#simplex just released a new desktop app πŸ‘€

hello! #SimpleX Chat v5.3 is released – with new desktop app, local files encryption and other improvements. More details in the post: https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/16ryv81/simplex_chat_the_private_messenger_without_any/ or https://mastodon.social/@simplex/111127289171455189

i was so confused why Walter Isaacson agreed to write Musk's biography, but to quote the NYT:

"Walter Isaacson's biography of the billionaire entrepreneur depicts a mercurial β€œman-child” with grandiose ambitions and an ego to match."

i agree. looks like i might read it after all 😏

element/matrix vs #SimpleX

element/matrix e2e encryption has had a rocky past with many holes. they do have more active rooms though. just don't trust that any of them are secure or e2e enabled.

i remember earlier this year notifying the admins when someone took over the element chat (with admin privileges) and started randomly calling like 15k members in the room as well as clitching the feed. it was a live hack.

tl,dr: i treat it like a public support blog or forum that i don't expect to be secure.

i was an early adopter of SimpleX, since december 2022 and i have had many chats and interactions with the developer, Evgeny.

SimpleX privacy & security is absolutely brilliant. it's still beta but it's growing...fast. the amount of rooms is growing and afaiac rn it is the absolute best out there for private and/or anonymous conversations.

i have always seen it as a Signal killer that could very well be a #matrix killer as well. πŸ€™πŸ»πŸ’œ

yes, though they do accept lightning payments and encourage people to use privacy.com for debit card payments and alias services addy.io #proton etc. πŸ€™πŸ»

it is a paid service and yes they take lightning. they encourage new users to use an alias email from #proton or addy.io or wherever. the less they know about their users, the better.

it's not that simple. a "fingerprint plugin" is only as good as how many other people use the same plugin. the increased anonymity comes from blending in with the crowd. plugins are a known metric to identify the uniqueness of a user's browser.

most people care a lot about about security and privacy. they just don't understand how much of their private data is being tracked, recorded and sold without their consent.

google is not your friend

if you don't like to be stalked around the internet with your search, location, and behavioral data collected, attached to your profile, stored indefinitely, and sold for profit...

check out kagi, it rocks
