Ruling your own country is an even worse experience. Would be so easy to let the colonisers back in and let them take charge. We could then have 99% uptime with a good currency and easier travel between the colonies... Is (political and tech) #independence overrated?

Worst case I'd recommend mirroring the repo to Github and not having Microsoft as the only option.

### What is Linux Phone Convergence?

Aside from privacy and security . . . "convergence" is one of the main appeals of Linux phones.

Convergence means your phone can be docked and used as a computer.

Linux phones are leaps and bounds ahead of Androids and iPhones when it comes to using your phone as a computer. This is because Linux phones run desktop Linux apps.

The phone in the video is Purism's [Librem5 phone](https://puri.sm/products/librem-5/), which is currently in stock for $649. It may be old slow hardware, but Purism is one of the main developers of Mobian Phosh (the Debian version of Mobile Linux), so they have things working fairly well on their hardware, but nothing even close to current Android or iPhone. DeGoogled phones are definitely the best options at the moment (Aug 2024).

Purism's other phone, their [Liberty phone](nostr:nevent1qqs056gmgknkwf4yrs3rwqdmwsxaqste7u53n6zqusndq0fcjzyx25gpzdmhxw309akx7cmpd35x7um58g6rsd3eqgsym07t03wahqjfl8r7hrppuqvlpralklk9mm25pzmpgkgtawx3d9grqsqqqqqp54rfj8), is the only smart phone completely made in the USA, with the exception of its removable WiFi Card being made in India, and its chassis in China.

Here is an [overview video of the Librem5 and some if it's issues](https://odysee.com/@TheLinuxGamer:f/librem5-final:1).

Most review videos are out of date by now. The #Librem5 early backers got is not what people buying now are getting, neither in hardware or software. After #PureOS Crimson comes out, it will be even better hopefully.

It's Linux that means you're not restricted. You can switch OSes and desktop environments. PureOS, Mobian, postmarketOS. Phosh, Gnome, KDE, SXMO. I'm guessing at least one of them supports tiling. Gnome on desktop does through an extension I use called tilix I think.

Depends how much you're willing to sacrifice and what your primary use of the device is.

If you're OK giving money to #Google and want (mostly) everything to work, then a Pixel with a degoogled OS like GrapheneOS, DivestOS, CalyxOS on the security express release channel.

If, on the other hand, you want to fund long term solutions, are willing to tinker and do not want to pump more money into Google, #Linux mobile is the way to go: #LibertyPhone from #Purism running PureOS, #Mobian or #postmarketOS or #FLX1 from #Furilabs running FuriOS (Droidian).

Unfortunately there appears to be no good one for Linux ARM

"Apple Inc. does not allow #iPhone purchasers to use the device as they wish, but as #Apple Inc. intends. Dear and fundamental as our cellphone has become to each of use, almost like an extension of our personhood, we don't so much own our phone as lease it under inflexible company made restrictions. Avis is not going to let somebody rebuild a core engine during the term of the rental, right? Well, Apple doesn't want its customers so much as looking under the hood, let alone tinkering with anything."

I (try to) use it. Can't see any way to create themimn the UI...

Are you saying it does have them?

They apparently came out with ToS thar lets them own everything you create, etc but I haven't verified this myself just read in news.
