It is pretty common practice in rural areas for people to shoot dogs seen chasing deer or livestock. We lost a hunting dog when I was a kid when two of them got off their run and disappeared for a few days for an adventure. Only one returned and it had a lot of blood spatter on it. I suspect the male was shot. It was a shame, but it seemed to be an unwritten rule, in that area anyway.
