Or maybe our greatest mistake was to assume that connecting everyone to everyone would somehow lead to anything else than the same kind of tribalism that has always existed in humanity.

I had a very interesting conversation with nostr:nprofile1qqsd7agwkg72wt8kjusz0cuw7pqy5sgz3q65qxnv59tq6qdqarre4tgprfmhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumn0wd68ytnzv9hxgtmpd3kqf4rmh3 about this last weekend. They identified our problematic relationship to quantification as a potential reason to our obsession with eternal growth. It was all pretty mind-blowing and thus also a little mind-numbing, so I write this with reserves. While the thought process isn't foreign to me, I'm wrestling with the path that the idea is taking in my mind. I don't have any good answers, yet anyways. Thus I figured I'd extend the reflection here, see what comes around. You did not disappoint.

Thanks for the context! I guess I can say that I can easily imagine a readily quantifiable economic system that is absolutely not about growth as some goal in itself, but about meaningful + responsible development in consideration of *all* it's participants, sentient or not. Call it 'green subsistence commons' or whatever, I'm sure some smarter people than I have already come up with something like that. ^^

I see. Hm, even when I imagine a world without any currency, a certain comparative (and therefore already quantitative) approach to valuation still seems inescapable Any individual likes something more than another thing, or needs something more than something else. Such quantification can maybe do without numbers, but that won't eliminate the different....size? extent? if not amount? of value ascribed to different things by different people.

Not sure I follow. Value and quantification don't need to connected at some fundamental reality. They are both already constructs to serve as viable models of reality, and in turn can be combined in viable ways.

I mean, any kind of trade is based on quantifiable value. That quantified value is 'real' in so far as it is the basis of any purposeful transaction.

Of course it can, if we accept that said quantification is an assigned abstraction and not 'objective' value.

And whether that valuation practical (and valuable) is of course dependant on the specific case.

For instance, when people get frustrated with me because I can't seem to simply say whether I want or don't want to do something, I try to tell them that it's rare that I either want something 100% or not at all (0%), and often find myself at 30% or 70% or whatever.

That sometimes helps me help them to understand that intent is not 0 or 1, at least not for me.

I'd say: If we define private property to mean you owning an entire factory that produces synthesizers, plus the capital to buy materials, components and hire the workforce you control, then I don't see how that can be compatible with anarchist ideas in any way. 'Anarchocapitalism' is a bullshit word, a neoliberal thought promoting that state power is somehow in the way of private property when it's actually the one thing that enables + enforces private property in today's societies.

*Personal* property however, aka anything that is suitable for your individual consumption, like your toothbrush and your instruments, that I see as totally fine and compatible with collective freedom. To a degree such property is an expression of identity and also accommodating highly individual needs (plus of course hygienical considerations such as with the toothbrush, etc.).

Of course the lines can get blurry. Once you own an entire studio including a soundbooth, a synthesizer park and a hoard of mics, I'd understand someone asking whether access should be limited to you alone or if the gear could be shared between you and ppl you agree sharing with.

Then again, the longer a bubble takes to burst, the worse it gets, and as long as the bubble is not bursting, it keeps being fed.

So, 'now' is maybe not the worst thing to happen...

Good for Mme Cadol, and every such lawsuit hopefully helps educate an industry that is notoriously bad at learning lessons otherwise. Let these companies and their shareholders bleed more money than they ever hoped to save by taking exploitative shortcuts.

Test reply, do you read me? I think something is really wrong with my relays. Which 4 ones should I set? Jumble does no allow more than that it seems D:

started with Iris, tried other clients, got frustrated at barely any client existing for both mobile and desktop for a cohesive experience, tried to understand how domains work, gave up about it when I realized I don't have a server and don't want one (yet), got annoyed by all the Bitcoiners and Sats and Zaps which I have zero interest in, got back into the game with Jumble, and right now wondering why Jumble does not notify me at all about your reply here :)))

nostr:npub18ug6hvhzxhdz6nw6t4k7ktcjx9e5w6n5tg7226y458g0vv4y9aqq3r20ex Let nobody say I'm not quick to change my mind at times. Thanks to everything you said, I quit Masto. x) Granted, my confusion at 'mostr' bridged accounts led to me believing more ppl are using it already than I thought and it doesn't seem possible to reply to those bridged posts with them seeing them, but eh, give it a few years I suppose. My ties on socmed are loose, and the important ppl are all also on Bsky anyway, if not here. So anyway, thanks for your patient explaining, it paid off I suppose, I treat nostr as the go-to free web/socmed for now and will recommend it as such.

Can recommend Niagara. Takes some getting used to but now I wouldn't have it any other way :)

I've been here a while, sporadically checking and posting, but my impression stands: the anything-but-obvious path to using #nostr both on desktop and mobile, and the lack of a quick and seamless setup and onboarding for any kind of person with near-zero foreknowledge is what I think the greatest entry barrier for most people. Compared to this, Fedi is a cakewalk (and it always felt that way to me, but apparently not to most people).

I sometimes feel that there's his impulse a *lot* of people seem to have to inwardly or openly resent other people for being more active, more helpful, more constructive, generally 'do-gooders'.

I don't get it. I mean, I'm fully aware I'm not as useful to my causes of interest as much as I maybe could be.

But that doesn't translate into resentment for me. It just makes makes me support the people who do something, in any way I can.

I guess I missed that point @ fuck passports.

Yes, I'd say it depends entirely on what's at stake. I lose nostr 'identity'? Pfff, good riddance, social media is ephemeral at best in my view. No loss there, start new.

As soon as things become more material however, 'just start new' is a little tricky, yeah. In an ideal worldwide society (yes, I too read that as: "fuck countries, and private property too") I suppose I could begin to imagine it.

yeah but I mean I wouldn't use my fediverse handle as login in other contexts. That's how I understand the "nostr id cyberpassport" notion however -- you sign in with it everywhere, increasing the actual damage of a scenario in which you no longer can access it...

(Of course, I don't really have a good idea myself how a decentralized, recoverable, unique and secure ID could work)

I keep seeing "don't lose your private key". Has anything changed about the irrecoverability when that happens? It would mean one is locked out from everything permanently where that nostr identity was used, wouldn't it?

For a long time I, as an short amab person, felt like turning that around and only wanted to date women significantly taller than me. My clear preference in the matter aside, I also reasoned at the time that if she's fine with that, she's already more open-minded than most people. #dating #height

Already from back in December, just in case anyone was wondering where *that* particular company is going.

I'd say it's possible to dismantle the term more directly by ackbowledging that 'free markets' cannot exist without the right to privately own means of production, which in turn is enforced by a state.

With 'Star Trek' I usually associate a needs-based economy, as far as Humans are concerned. Or as some people call it, 'replicator communism'.

No matter the label, I do favor public ownership and oversight of all key industries (energy, housing, healthcare, food, transportation, ... ). It's funny how people expect democratic societies to work politically without also implementing a mostly democratized economy.

Another great idea from our techbro overlords. The nonsense of 'Earthscrapers':
