What makes it interesting?

To me, it seems unnecessary, confusing and bloats the UI (with zaps in three lines!).

A zap-comment only adds signal if it can be responded to (like in zap.stream or nostrnests chat).

I don't think displaying them like this would incentivize people to make display-worthy comments.

If they have something interesting to say, it will be in the comment section.

Even with WoT magic, this is more likely a tool for post hijacking with spam than one for adding signal.

nostr is still mainly used alongside twitter. in the best rare case, as a replacement. and only because people are running away from something about twitter they don't like.

there is nothing that people want to run to nostr for yet. zaps were promising, but bitcoin is still a hurdle (one that primal is doing the best at overcoming), and it's doubtful lightning could scale to a massive adoption moment.

nostr needs a feature or experience that's unique and sets it apart. i *think* that is the ecosystem of microapps over the long term...but it's definitely not in the short term. and that might be ok.

for twitter the initial draw was the simplicity and weirdness of 140 characters (we started with zero network effect, facebook had it all...that's built over time). later it became the conversation which lead to the "public square" (owned by a private corporation ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). and then as it grew, it had a single point of control/failure people could attack.

nostr doesn't have to worry about that last bit. it's an incredible feature. but not one the average person cares about (no matter how much they yell "FREE SPEECH!"...if people actually cared about free speech, bitcoin and nostr would be all they used...they don't).

all this to say, we're not doomed. but what we think is the killer feature isn't right now. who's going to discover the one that is?

User discovery on Nostr is hard. Please shill me 2-3 npubs to follow. These should be profiles you'd recommend to new Nostriches. These should be profiles with "smaller" followings, not larger profiles that most already know and interact with. Don't just tag them. Leave a couple words or a sentence describing why you followed them or recommend them. Thanks! #NotAHellthread

Talking about #bitcoin is still such a hard topic to talk about but to most people. People either aren’t interested or are opposed. Unfortunately I think the economic situation will get worse before the majority will start to pay attention.

Just talked to a friend that was scammed and it involved Bitcoin. Now she doesn’t want to think about Bitcoin again. A shame.

How does one help educate friends and loved ones before it’s too late? 🤔

I'm not sure I should write down these thoughts right now while I'm not sure about them, but if you are reading this apparently I did.

I think nostr may already be doomed for two reasons. And as a result of that, if I conclude as such, it would make sense to start working on a successor protocol. I've been taking some notes about what we should change if we started over, but that's the extent of it, I'm not working on a successor protocol. I'm only working on nostr. So don't misinterpret this note, which just represents some thoughts I've been having.

Reason one is the misaligned incentives of note copying. The incentives are to copy your notes to every relay you can, blast them out everywhere, to get more reach. That incentive doesn't go away until and unless all the clients do the outbox model. But they don't have an incentive to change, and there are people who don't give a fuck about fixing this and argue against fixing it and argue for note copying, and there is no way in a free society to make them care. So we can never fix this, and nostr will always be centralized in practice and never what it could have been. That means nostr is doomed and unfixable and we should make sure to start differently next time so this doesn't happen again.

Reason two is that the seed culture of nostr was far too monolithic: bitcoiners. What a culture develops into probably depends on how diverse its seed was. It's quite hard to get people onto nostr unless they are at least very bitcoin tolerant. Most people (yes, I think most) are put off by so much bitcoin promotion and related posts. Certainly people can follow anybody they want, and make their own independent cultures, perhaps even on a disjoint set of relays. But this isn't likely to happen due to the law of large numbers - there are far more ways for them to encounter and interact with the nest of bitcoiners then to not encounter and interact with them.

These are thoughts I'm entirely unsure about. Maybe I'm wrong in both cases. These are my worries.

If a nostr panel at a conferenced existed composed of our beloved devs and you could ask them the toughest of tough questions, what would you ask them? what type of panel would you like to see?

There is an interest in having the community non ruggable.. but they don’t really worry about decentralization or being censored. Also they don’t care about zapping…

USABILITY and UX is THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR FOR THEM!

I got some interest from the interoperability of different apps on the protocol - but it’s still hard to understand for them.

For most people #nostr doesn’t solve a problem yet. Which is fine.. I think it’s just an important reality check and it makes you realize how early everything on nostr is right now. Most here did their POW - and if you read this you’re an #nostrOG

I just realized how fkn exciting it is to be part of a new technology emerging. We all see the work we need to do but also have the grand vision - which no one knows how it’s going to play out.
