Right. You kind of have to optimize for one or the other medium.
Plenty of Youtube channels I watch have ~10 minute-ish overviews of some particular thing. Sabine Hossenfelder for science news, nostr:nprofile1qyvhwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddakk7um5wgh8q6twdvhsqgp3ed8nqpenntha396z26mszm2xdmx2vs4clndqfk8fs7g67kulny5q8nxj for urbanist content, etc.
They tend to flip between camera shots of themselves at a desk "waist-up", I.e. news-anchor style, and then other screen-filling content like graphics, maps, etc. This is good, and works particularly well for TV presentation. It would NOT work as a podcast.
But most video podcasts, it's just Zoom in on someone's face, where you can see the ring light reflected in their pupils. Blow that up onto a 70-inch TV and you've got a GIANT TALKING HEAD staring you in the eyes for 2 hours. No variation, just the head.
It's jarring... do people actually do that?
Yes, quite a lot of them. Our biggest base on one platform is almost 70% TV watchers. I mean I suppose we aren't terrible on the eyes, but why?
There is truth to that. We stay away from screen-as-a-need for the most part, simple images to back up statements and the like. We also post all of that type of material when we use it so people can just go look and grab it if they want. My biggest pet peeve is the over abundance of trash AI voice over and other slop ridden stuffs. That will get me out the door before the 10 second mark.
That is the exact issue, stay strong! They eat a lot!
We don't have a very active bear issue but they are around at times, we do have fox, bobcats, and so freaking many coyotes. Even with this pack of floofs we will have groups of 5 or more of them coming in and testing boundaries fairly frequently. Bobcats and fox are absolutely devastating. We definitely did not need all of them, 2 would have been fine, but Freyja, Floki, and Ragnar came as a package deal, Thor and Odin were more issues of heartstrings being tugged.
We have about 100 chickens 60/40 meat/layer, currently 15 turkeys, 4 geese, 5 goats, and 3 horses, with another set of Boer for meat goats that will be ready in spring.
It is without question a lot of dog. They are all pretty awesome and great at their job. Left to right is; Odin (chonk), Thor (Torden Floof), Freyja (Baby Frey), Floki (Flokes), and Ragnar (Raggy).
Honestly, its just the expectation of the masses. Most of the places ours is found dont include video, those that do are because that is what is desired from that particular audience. Good news is on almost all of them you can do what I do; turn off the screen plug in headphones and listen while doing other mundane tasks.

I had more fun in the digital world today than I have in ages. I got to play around in systemd a tiny bit (did I mention I F*#$@^* dislike systemd with a passion) and that was actually fun. I also got it to work, which is always the optimal outcome. It was like my early days, playing with stuff I wanted to do, rather than the stuff I *need* to do for whatever mentally made up reason I created for myself in the moment (job)...
Nostr is awesome! It's like the digital playground the internet used to be with BBS's and then IRC etc.. I really do love this community.

At this point I see my existing stack as something I hold as an insurance policy/restart our life in another country fund. I’m not selling, but also ain’t buying. I’ll accept it when people offer to pay w it and spend it where it makes sense, but that’s about it
So where am I putting my fiat instead? Stacking as many other freedom and sovereignty tools/skills that my family will need regardless of what financial markets do. Some of those:
-Food and water sovereignty- homesteading plants, animals, tools and skills (making quality compost, biochar, rainwater harvesting, slowing/sinking water in the landscape, etc). -Travel and free movement- updating the passports for all the kids (no Plan B yet) for planes. By land we’re building out the “go van” rig with tools and knowledge to work on it wherever. Got a “parts van” to match our current camper van so we have redundancy of all parts and the body itself (and you get to learn/make mistakes on the donor van), high end diagnostics tool, and every socket/ratchet that we’ll ever need. Spending at least 1-4 months on the road every year is good practice for our entire family and fun as hell
-All of the building/carpentry projects (especially for rent producing units)- building materials are only going up in price, and mailbox money is trickier to come by when you don’t code or sell digital products
-Freedom tech- I’ll admit I should learn to diy more in this area and not rely on out of the box products. For us it was a start9 server, pixel with grapheneOS, an ozone generator (to treat infections, and to have an oxygen source for kids with low oxygen levels which is a $5k bill from a hospital- ask me how I know), browns gas generator (hydrogen for breathing and water infusing), all of the EMF mitigation devices like Blushield, FLFE (focused life force energy), and now lots of Aires Tech since they shared a bunch of their units to test

-A valuable free one (but does take time, and you can donate to the centers)- Meditation. Went for a vipassana meditation course this year and received pure signal from wherever our higher wisdom/intuition comes from- I call it God.
When I sit for meditation daily I find I have so much more control of my mind and reactions. The best place to test those mental “gainz” is in everyday parenting and interacting with the internet (mostly nostr). Just looking at current events in clown world are a great practice for this. Can I view a rage bait video unemotionally, analyze it objectively, and without interjecting my biases and judgements into it? Charged comments coming at us are also good practice for awareness and choosing actions/responses beyond our defaults
-Education and Learing (just playin)- for the kids it’s been stacking piles of physical books (mostly ambleside recommendations), a nostr:nprofile1qyt8wumn8ghj7ct49eex2mrp09skymr99ehhyecpz3mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuerkv36zuer9wcqzp677ay55tmc99qa7ptpauftc0jq6dfv2zr6k37wxkcwem4gn4kadscd7jf tablet, forest school a few days a week, jiu-jitsu training, etc. For the parents its been online courses, lots of books for us too, conferences (to learn, but also find our tribe IRL), lots of YouTube university for diesel mechanic videos
I’ve found that tangible skills and know how are our most valuable assets in a rapidly shifting world. And imparting those skillsets to the next generation is a massively worthwhile investment
In conclusion, I'm good w NGU but wouldn’t mind if NGD so we can be forced to take a long hard look at the state of the bitcoin network, and where we want it to be in 5 or 50 years. Great feedback you are getting. One other tip and an offer, shut down the fans/HVAC etc.. some background noise on the cast like a hum, and consider hanging some blankets in the space to deaden echo. If you want to I would be happy to do a quick edit on your audio to help clean it up, not sure I can do it go-forward but happy to show what can be done. Send me a message if you want to do that, I use Izotope RX11 for audio and can usually get stuff pretty clear. Still really enjoyed it and just keep going! Try to pick a release time frame and stick to that as well. Will really help people to know when to look for the next drop.

Yeah I considered/am considering moving ours to Fountain, but also not completely convinced it is the right move quite yet. Then again we are fairly random in our topics and guests, which is one of the reasons we are waiting for now. Glad you are here though, and will check out your pod as well.
