A bubbly and eccentric soul with an eclectic range of hobbies and skills from technology, self hosting, devops, cyber security and full stack to the great outdoors and self sufficiency. Hopefully this is the start of freedom from the Orwellian future that faces us

That's rather ambitious. It's fascinating how everybody seems to have a different opinion of what we want to achieve here. Looks like we're all here for different reasons

Interesting. I prefer that too, it's nice to see some familiar faces and "bump into" people randomly. I feel like that could still be the case with Nostr no matter how big it gets though. Because you can have private relays and communities and people can be kicked out of those communities quite easily if they break the rules too

Big question, do we want Nostr to become mainstream and have an open, decentralised internet? Is that the problem we're trying to solve? Or does everybody just like having a small community like the old days of the internet

That's fantastic! I'm a huge advocate for natural remedies. I've done a lot of research into fungi based pathology as I'm always out foraging but I haven't kept up-to-date with it for a couple of years now. The last thing I was looking into was the effects of Bee venom; they think it could be an anticancer agent: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10378503/

Money spending tip…

If you’re unable to find any wood then hear up the Sourdough bread in the oven for 5-10 minutes and I’ll go really soft and fluffy🙈😆

Note that Sourdough is incredibly addictive. Proceed with caution ⛔️

I didn’t end up releasing this way in the end but I did do all the research and dealt with PPL before my fellow band members decided to go with Distrokid - which was rather disappointing but understandable.

Please forgive me if I over explain anything here but essentially you want to go to PPL’s website as they’re the ones who allocate ISRCs in the UK. It’s quite simple if you go to this link where they break down how it all works: https://www.ppluk.com/royalties/uk-royalties/recording-rightsholders/#isrc-registration

You can go here and register your IRSC code. There’s a few options but the simplest is “I want an ISRC but do not wish to register as a PPL member” it’ll then send you to a page with a big blue button saying “Start registration” : https://myppl.ppluk.com/s/qq

You might have already been through all of this and if so I apologise if it comes across as patronising but feel free to ask any questions and I’ll do my best to help

Sorry to hear that, if you’re using Linux then I suggest using a file system called BTRFS. It keeps Snapshots and it’s extremely robust. If you set it up to use RAID 10 then you’re very unlikely to lose data.

I suggest running “journalctl -f” to see any failures or looking through logs. If there’s something causing drives to become corrupt then you want to pick that up as soon as possible!!

It's tempting to try, I guess this is where we're at now 😂

I wonder what the likelihood is that my private key has been compromised. When I began using Nostr I tried out quite a few different clients before adopting a signing extension. Now days I use remote signing. However there's always that part of me that is pretty sure the whole thing is pointless and there's a malicious client out there already which has gone and snatched it up!

BTC is certainly a fantastic cryptocurrency but it most definitely doesn’t win on privacy. Monero (XMR) is private by default. In fact it’s very difficult to make a transaction that isn’t private, even if you initially bought through a KYC exchange. It’s compatible with atomic swaps too so you can exchange it with BTC P2P in a zero trust manner.

XMR employs several techniques such as stealth addresses and ring signatures to ensure that its blockchain provides POW (proof of work) whilst remaining private, unlike BTC’s private blockchain.

XMR also uses the RandomX POW algorithm which is CPU friendly as it favours hardware that handles a more varied and random workload. This makes it ASIC resistant meaning that buying all of the ASIC processors and starting a mining farm like people do with BTC won’t really work. This means regular individuals can mine at home :D

Not to mention how scalable XMR is with dynamic block sizes that can change depending on how much traffic is running on the network.

Monero has a long way to go, as does BTC but, for me at least, it wins on privacy. Especially if you run your own node!

To compress video uploads?

Does it ever want to make you just carry around a massive EMP 😂

Let’s hope there’s no pacemakers around 😬

I think currently this stands true but it’s not unsolvable. Demand for new social media platforms is arising. Especially given the fact many countries are looking to require ID for social media as well as limit consumption by legal means. Not to mention the censorship issue everyone is becoming increasingly aware of. If Jack Dorsey for instance began promoting a new client with a killer user experience, the ability to chose your algorithm etc on social media as a sponsored campaign I think it would really start kicking off.

Of course we need to flatten the learning curve while still keeping the platform decentralised and redundant. Before this is done though we need to implement a tried and tested set of protocols to deal with the security issues Nostr faces. I was supposed to be publishing a paper this week but I’m very ill on holiday so it might be delayed. Give us a follow for updates - and also because I’m trying to get followers because Nostr isn’t very fun if nobody hears you!

I know you’re quite busy today, as am I but when you have time check out my post from 3 weeks ago on this: nostr:note1s3scknjhp3dj3vxgdz7m9gkmgd7e04qfmt6hpjyj5rrfgfdggmkqw05ac0

nostr:npub1q33jywkl8r0e5g48lvrenxnr3lw59kzrw4e7p0cecslqzwc56eesjymqu0 are these the early investors of the Kali Mera Show?

Over in Scotland they have none of the high tech weather equipment used for the Kali Mera Show like George or Tree of Truth so they have to reply on Coo the Cow 🐄

And now we all know why self hosting is great!

I think George would do a relatively (key word here) good job of being the President of The United States of America

It always bounces back. I quite like it when it drops as I can go and buy loads more for a good price before it shoots up again

I'd love to work out the entropy of something like thisanfd work out how secure it is. I suppose if it's generating a melody instead of just random notes then that lowers the entropy so it would have to be higher. I just really love the idea of unlocking my computer with a midi keyboard. You could definitely do this with PAM authentication in Linux and probably MacOS too. Or if you found a way to encode text using music notes then you could create a password manager that takes your existing passwords and converts them accordingly to after you press the midi keys. So many ideas 😆

Is this actually a tattoo of yours? I have a list of things I want to incorporate into my tattoos and a shell forkbomb is one of them. I knew I couldn't have been the first person to think of getting that tattooed but I haven't seen anyone else do it before. So good to see. If this is yours do you have any other nerdy tattoos that you feel comfortable sharing? Of course I understand if you want to shield yourself from tattoo identification, mass surveillance is a bitch now days!!

I really like this idea! My only concern is that it the Nostr private key would need to be send to the server because there's no JavaScript to sign events client side. This is quite a serious security concern.

A practical workaround of course would be to have a public instance of Nostr (like Iris.to) available via TOR without JavaScript and then an authenticated instance would require you to whitelist JavaScript for the site so it can sign events client side.

In regards to performance performance and user-experience I would assume it would be similar to Dread; a very popular alternative to Reddit that runs over TOR.

The only possible solution I can see without JavaScript running on the site is to have the server send the unsigned event in JSON to the browser for you copy and then you'd have to use an external piece of software such as browser extension or desktop app to sign the event which you can submit to the server. Of course if you're utilizing a plugin you could streamline this much better.

The latter is light-years away from ideal though and wouldn't be widely adopted. If we want these technologies to be used then we need to reduce the barrier to entry.

Of course these are my initial thoughts but if you have any solutions or criticisms then please let me know :)
