The crypto might actually be a good bootstrapping mechanism to give this some start of critical mass. I like the way you can kind of get your hands on the messages and the encryption. It’s more versatile because it’s basically built-in in the end encryption so even if the social media feed is garbage, it’s still a nice network that you can use for into end encrypted messages.
Years ago, the anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about clay pots, tools for hunting, grinding-stones, or religious artifacts.
But no. Mead said that the first evidence of civilization was a 15,000 years old fractured femur found in an archaeological site. A femur is the longest bone in the body, linking hip to knee. In societies without the benefits of modern medicine, it takes about six weeks of rest for a fractured femur to heal. This particular bone had been broken and had healed.
Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, you cannot drink or hunt for food. Wounded in this way, you are meat for your predators. No creature survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal. You are eaten first.
A broken femur that has healed is evidence that another person has taken time to stay with the fallen, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended them through recovery. A healed femur indicates that someone has helped a fellow human, rather than abandoning them to save their own life.
“Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts,” Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; For, indeed, that's all who ever have.”
It’s surprising that they weren’t already there, but I can get behind this
Great piece by Elizabeth Warren in NYT today !
There’s a number of institutions that only work if people believe that they’re actually working, like democracy, so I reject this ideology that if misinformation can destroy it, it shouldn’t exist.
The issue is that every bank would fail if we had some sort of six sigma event, where everybody decided to pull the money out at the same time. This would never happen organically. It could happen with enough of the right people, saying the right things on social media, and the help of a few algorithms. It doesn’t take a lot of imagination to think of a scenario where someone could be attempting to spark a bank run for their own ends.
Cmon do people need to watch it’s a wonderful life again?
The problem is the talking if it causes a probabilistically impossible event to occur.

Oh, I guess I should say I’m not saying slow down on Nostr this is more of my general response to the 50 other takes in which people are saying oh my God they’re coming for us right now. Nostr is awesome and we should keep it moving for the very reason we can’t trust some attention seeking congressman.
I think we should slow down a bit, first of all this guy is a bit of a shock jockey. We have no idea the context of his conversation. This could’ve been in the context of a hypothetical in which you have some bad actors using AI and social media to promote false narratives. This could be Putin or China beyond just like jokers like Mike Alfred. It’s responsible to ask these questions. Some of the tail scenarios here are really bad news.
It seems like the bitcoin price dropped almost 20% on the prospect that a bunch of tech bros would have to sell to pay rent. Did I observe this correctly?
Or the “belated regret” tents as they call them in Silicon Valley
Imagine a world without Uber, DoorDash, Hulu, Snapchat, Coinbase or AirBnB. Is this a bleak existence we want for our children?
