If the Catholic Church is a political pawn, then it is a poor one. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, staunchly opposes the current administration on deportations and they opposed the last one on Abortion and LGBT stuff.

You can tell who is playing a political game when their views or rhetoric change with the times. I think you will find that the Catholic Church teaches the same things today as they did 500 years ago and that they did 2000 years ago.
