Grumpy old #PHP developer trying to learn #elixir with an unhealthy obsession with coding, dad jokes, and #Linux. Living in Olympia, WA #OlyWA

Also curious #linux people. If you were following a new and upcoming distro like #nixbook how would you want to get updates on it?

Should I have an email newsletter type of thing, a blog? What's your fav way to get updates on projects you want to follow?

#OpenSource

This is awesome. I love getting #linux and #nixos out there in the real world :)

This is an article / interview my local library system did on me and the upcycling i've been up to for the past 5 years.

Quick #elixir question..

I'm going through a pretty new course that has things like

<%= variable %>

But realize my lsp is auto correcting that to

{ variable }

But there are still times where it keeps <% ... %>

I feel like i'm missing something...

#phoenix

Ahhhh another intel iMac saved by #linux and FOSS.. running #nixbook based on #nixos

It's been 2 months now since I switched one of my kids from an #apple #ipad to a #GooglePixel tablet.

Honestly, it's way way better. App updates are automatic and transparent, no weird creepy iCloud being forced down my throat, and Family Link is a much better way to do parental control.

So if you're buying a tablet for your kids, highly recommend the pixel tablet over the ipad

But I really do wish there was better Android or Linux tablets out there.. Still seems to be a big blind spot

WOW.. nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpqvvuhk2dlpas24dzae3umyaeet8eetke50us2yusmx862uajlektq24s37t has given us a gift!

An #amd #linux laptop with a 16" 2k screen and CENTERED keyboard!!

This now joins the VERY short list of full size laptops without an evil numpad!

Last month, I felt like I was noticing the fan going and lock ups.. i took it apart and did find there was a whole SATA tray area i'll never use, kinda in the way of the airflow.

I took it out and its been great since!

My little 2' x 4' garage #linux desk powered by a little #AMD Beelink, and a nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpqvvuhk2dlpas24dzae3umyaeet8eetke50us2yusmx862uajlektq24s37t launch lite as well.

Running #NixOS of course! :)

Who else has a little secret workstation hidden away?

https://github.com/mkellyxp/nix/blob/main/common%2Fbeekeeper.nix

Then in my packages list, I call it like so.

(pkgs.callPackage ./beekeeper.nix { })

I bet there is a similar flow for tarballs

nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpqsaz8s86z5g9d6tu59g45l64u5k69rj3zc9lzpkmcsn646uhnpftqgn62zd Ive not needed to install from a tarball, but do have an app image I keep maintained as a nix package.

That's likely the answer. Make a nix package that builds it. Then it's part of your main build.

Are you sure it's not already in nix packages though? I'm always shocked how much is there

nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpqsaz8s86z5g9d6tu59g45l64u5k69rj3zc9lzpkmcsn646uhnpftqgn62zd the best way I've described it is it's like having your entire system in a docker compose file.

But even better because you get things like generations and nix-shell

nostr:nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpqsaz8s86z5g9d6tu59g45l64u5k69rj3zc9lzpkmcsn646uhnpftqgn62zd nice. It's a weird concept at first, but when it clicks it's hard to see a better way to build a system. For me at least.

But even I bounced off nix a few times before it stuck. But I've been full time for 3 years now making it the longest distro I've ever used. By far

I REALLY don't want to join #Bluesky and love it here on the fedi. But people keep telling me I just won't find enough people here to follow and engage with.

If you love #linux #WebDevelopment #php or #elixir #elixirlang #phoenixframework drop a comment here and retoot so I can follow you.

I really love the community here and want to find my people. :)

Why didn't I think of that? Install from one installer to another USB drive.

Ive never done that but seems like it should be possible
