What is 'Bikeshedding'?

"Bikeshedding," also known as Parkinson's Law of Triviality, is a phenomenon where people in an organization give disproportionate weight to trivial issues. It's often seen in meetings where complex topics are glossed over, while simple, easy-to-understand (and thus seemingly easy to contribute to) issues consume an inordinate amount of time and debate.

The term comes from C. Northcote Parkinson's book "Parkinson's Law," where he describes a fictional committee tasked with approving plans for a nuclear power plant. They breeze through the complex details of the reactor itself (because they don't understand it), but spend hours debating the trivial design of the bicycle shed. Everyone can visualize a bicycle shed and has an opinion, so everyone wants to contribute.

But, they are definitely celebrating way, way too prematurely, and I see no indication that it won’t be a catastrophe just like the rest.”

🇮🇷🇺🇸 UNPOPULAR OPINION: I know this might sound strange, but hear me out.

“The US told Iran that the American strikes on nuclear facilities were a one-off operation and were not intended to overthrow the Iranian government”, the WSJ reported.

What if this is “part of the deal” Iran agreed to. The US warned, and the sites were empty. Iran might even be allowed to “retaliate” without causing American casualties. THEN, agree to a peace deal. Everyone saves face. Because Israel in the US have just declared victory. Essentially saying they don’t need to do anymore.

Iran has made similar deals with the US before.

The attempt to cut the fiscal deficit was largely performative.

The 2024 GOP platform explicitly said they wouldn’t cut Social Security or Medicare. They also said they wanted to modernize the military, so that makes cuts there unlikely (and every Congress person will fight for DoD pork in their district). Veterans benefits are not easy to cut (should have thought of that before sending so many of them abroad for frivolous reasons; now we owe them). High interest expense is the result of accumulated debt. Those are the big spending areas. All hard to cut.

That leaves the little areas. The small slices on the pie chart. Those areas were where DOGE was digging around in when the Big Beautiful Bill came and began slowly running them over. Even before the bill, federal spending has been higher here in the first half of 2025 than the first half of 2024.

Nothing stops this train. Most of the debates are just about whether to toggle it 10% faster or slower, basically.

My friend had a large party today, with about 60 people for his son's graduation party. My friend's Blackstone wasn't working properly, it wouldn't get hot, so I took over for him so he could host and greet family.

I ended up fixing the Blackstone, their was a problem with the propane regulator pressure IMO, and I cooked about 60 burgers and probably two dozen hotdogs. It was fun! 🤣 That Blackstone was awesome.

I love my Weber grill, but man that thing is nice.

I know nothing about war technology, but it seems to me that the war in Ukraine has really changed things. Are what we're seeing with the new Iran / Israel conflict a reflection of that? Two countries who don't share a border seem to be able to hit each other pretty hard and the balance of offense vs defense seems to have shifted. Before Israel was able to stop most incoming rockets, but now Iran is able to have enough get through to cause real damage.

People have speculated about swarms of drones for years, we saw that with the Ukrainian attack on the Russian airforce... It feels like maybe military tech is able to be relatively cheap and agile using consumer tech. Interesting times.
