Can there be relay swarms with brands and social grouping? Like groups of relays? Having just 1 I think limits the decentralized aspect by funneling certain conversations through one place

Relays feel like much less of a big deal than fedi instances. I find myself thinking of relays like "swarms" in that It seems clear to me fro. My use so far you need about a dozen or so of them at least for this place to work.

I think it would be cool to be able to switch relay group to, say, a set of relays focused on a hobby, (kind of like an old forum) it could be like discovering a new, hidden country.

I want lists for pretty much the same purpose, but maybe a little more focused on specific people.

You log into the relays, read a curated feed of top posts there, and start saving the npubs you are interrested in into lists.

We need things like group relays, lists, etc so that more groups can join and easily have their own "space" and enjoy.

This has become the cypherpunk clubhouse.

Let's make it easy for others to build their own on the protocol.

Nostr should strive to capture the feeling of interacting in a live conversation with other people + the ability to discover, follow, and interact with new groups. I want to load this app up and feel like I'm exploring a map in Civilization- discovering new towns and people as I go.

Right now alot people here are posting in a vacuum with out alot of interation. The inability to group people, make lists means I have to go to my gallows and individually remember to check my favorite follows... this is too clunky.

1. listr.lol

2. relay lists/groups

3. nests

Nostr has become the cypherpunk/btc clubhouse but the lack or lists, relay organisation tools, etc makes it hard to expand the network to accomodate multiple communities. I want to be able to "load up" a new relay list and get get a new, organized set of people to interact with.

I heard that bluesky may not even have a block button yet, which is going to make life for those folks challenging.

I want to go on just to compare but honestly it sounds like it's even as far along yet as nostr.

As for the attitude.. honestly let them hate the shitcoins/web3 decentralization theater.

Recently, I have seen everyone's suggestions for Nostr's new user growth. Most of them think that the reason for the slow growth of new users is that our place is like a Bitcoin echo chamber, and everyone is discussing Bitcoin, so other users who are not interested will not enter. It is recommended not to talk about the topic of Bitcoin in the future, and it is even suggested not to fill in the relevant introduction about Bitcoin and freedom, for fear of scaring away newcomers.

I think these are not the most fundamental reasons. The establishment of Nostr is very compatible with the concept of the Bitcoin crowd, especially the lightning payment zap reward. It is precisely because of this that Nostr has a very strong belief foundation, and we are willing to give the clients on Nostr the greatest tolerance and inconvenience in experience. Only in this way can the client on Nostr have time to grow and improve. Only when we really like this place, we are willing to spend time and energy here.

If we cater to new users, don't discuss bitcoin, ban bitcoin and introduce yourself freely. As a result, we cannot truly express ourselves, and Nostr is about to lose its vitality and soul. This will just kill the place.

My advice:

1. No matter who you are, you should truly express yourself, whether it is the love for Bitcoin or the praise of freedom, this is the reason we like this place, it belongs to us. Only if we like it here, others may like it too. Nostr is not just Bitcoin, Nostr is a way of life, please share your life as much as you want.

2. Tolerate others, as long as everyone does not attack those who are willing to express their love for shitcoins here, this has already made a huge contribution to the growth of Nostr. Because people who come here can truly express themselves, you don't need to pay attention to him, but please don't attack people who express themselves differently from you. Otherwise, there will be racial discrimination about coins here, which will prevent more people from joining.

3. The attention and recommendation of clients on Nostr is too centralized, and most of the recommendations are bitcoiners. I am not saying that this is not good. It is necessary to make decentralized user recommendations on the client, so that users in every field can build their communities and circles here. This requires user experience design on the client side.

4. We continue to build better here, waiting for an opportunity...

Because we are here, Nostr has a great soil and I am hopeful for the future, building together. #Nostr

I think people forget that most social apps start as niche- for example when I checked out mastodon 3 years it was just a hand full of sub cultures.

nostr even now is also not really prime time ready- even if it is improving fast. So it's good that it has a dedicated user base already that tolerates the wonkyness while it is essentially in open beta.

I also think until relay switching/lists/topic curating improves its just physically difficult for the ecosystem to grow. Right now I manually check my favorite accounts and have no way to organise them- that is not sustainable for a bigger more diverse community. Tech is not there yet.

Nice! Going past a simple reply here is a pretty bad experience right now.

Taking break from nostr for a few days. I need to get off tilt and focus on my work.

I’ve been reflecting on the state of things here as i start to use bluesky more often (i still like nostr much better fwiw).

I know this may offend some of you but I’m getting frustrated with how caught up we all are in our zapping wonderland with no concern for the outside world.

If we want this place to grow and succeed we really need to take a look in the mirror and ask ourselves what it would be like to join nostr right now if you knew nothing about bitcoin. You would probably hate it, and stop using it within a day. Our worlds may revolve around bitcoin, but to a majority of people, they could give two shits about bitcoin.

Nostr is now considered by many outsiders as a “bitcoin project”. And I, for one, think that’s a terrible thing for nostr adoption and growth. There are brilliant people in this world who care about freedom tech but just don’t understand bitcoin yet and want nothing to do with it. And by making nostr all about bitcoin, we’ve scared those brilliant people off, who could have helped this place develop even further than it already has.

The way things stand right now, I see nostr adoption as being fully tied to bitcoin adoption. People won’t want to come here until they understand bitcoin. Instead of selling people just nostr, we now have to sell them nostr + bitcoin. And it shouldn’t be that way.

I’m still bullish on nostr, but we really need to do some self reflection at this point and ask ourselves what the correct path forward is.

See ya in a few internet frens 👋

I agree with the gist here- we got workto do! however it is worth pointing out that most start up social media gets associated with a subculture- this was true of fediverse-mastodon before as well.

When the general culture suddenly sees the value, the "shift" is often sudden and parabolic to a new system.
