Bringing Back Practical Skills for Boys
At the turn of the 20th century, boys were encouraged to work with their hands, learning woodworking, metalworking, and other practical skills that built confidence and self-reliance. These abilities weren’t just useful—they were respected.
Fast forward to today, and hands-on skills are too often looked down on, replaced by screens and disposable culture. Trade skills are undervalued, even though they remain just as essential.
These images from King’s Series in Woodwork and Carpentry (1911) by Charles A. King is a reminder of what we’ve lost. Maybe it’s time we start encouraging boys to build, create, and work with their hands again.

When my mom died last year we found poems expressing how she just wanted a shred of love from my dad. This was many decades after leaving my dad. She never even hinted to us that she wrote poetry. I am increasingly of the option that young adults right out of high school are better served by getting some sort of skill that is in demand.
This is before college…
That skill can be a fall back when times are difficult.
This notion that everyone MUST go to college is old and outdated.
And only benefits the college endowment…

I hate regular notebooks…
I always set them down and forget them in the shop.
But, small notebooks that fit in a pocket and don’t tear up are hard to find.
Until I found these. They are government notebooks.
