As you do this, one suggestion, please see if you can analyze altcoins in the context of a specific use case.
I think there are at least 3 different ones in the overall space.
1. Digital gold. A long term store of value, inflation hedge, impossible , or at least very hard, to confiscate. Bitcoin is a clear winner, at least in my view, due to decentralization, network effect, etc.
2. Daily payment rails, like, to buy a coffee. This is where speed and fees matter a lot. Enter lightning, but here we compete with fiat payment rails that work pretty good, to be honest, in my view, at least in the developed world, like paypass, Visa, revolut, cash app, I can do transactions instantly and for free... But no privacy and "they" can block me if they want.
Privacy is another dimension here. Actually also in the digital gold use case, because ideally we don't want dystopian powers to even know we have Bitcoin, right?
3. Smart contracts. Here we enter things like etherum, Solana, etc. and capabilities like DAO, decentralized exchanges, or even these digital receipts for paying for images, however they call them. This is what Bitcoin was probably never even designed or intended to be used for, but still people try.
So, not sure if it helps, but I felt like sharing.
I think that, if we compare Bitcoin with other coins, it will be good to say compare for what, what use case
Good luck with your research.
Can you please share a bit more about your setup for Computing and Communication?
This is an area I want to make progress this year, towards a freedom tech.
It will be a journey.
And I guess I'm looking for the right balance for me, between a convenience of a mindless use of big tech vs freedom tech, which of course comes with some usability drawbacks, and costs, and work.
Thank you.
Good luck!
Today is a good day to create a secure off-site data backup.
https://blog.lopp.net/how-to-securely-back-up-data-to-cloud-storage/
I think 7-zip with AES encryption is also a valid option, right?
Files can be split into chunks and uploaded to any cloud.
But it's manual.
But very simple
And I think good enough for some use cases at least.
Thoughts?
Well, if framed like this, you are right, I don't need convincing, I should just go ahead and switch to freedom tech
However, is it a "complete authority over me" if I simply keep my pictures on Google photos and use Gmail?
In one sense, yes, it is, in that, they could easily delete my pictures (I have a backup), and for sure they know a lot about me (but unfortunately they know it already, but yes, better to move out for the future)
Yeah, I guess, as I'm writing these words, I'm convincing myself to move more fully
Thank you
#Bitcoin is an asset class and that's a major revolution 🔥
If Fidelity, BlackRock and ten other ETF issuers all agreed that bitcoin is an asset class then it should be 10X to 100X bigger than it is right now. https://video.nostr.build/29582fece0252eab8e4ef88ee2d8c08cf5bd9f1d3c82f7f335a67f57fa9995b0.mp4
Yes
Looks like these companies do agree that Bitcoin is an asset class, as they want to create an ETF
Is the ETF finally going to be approved? We don't know. Looks like yes, from what we have seen, but we don't know
Is it going to cause the price to go 10X?
I think it's wise to stay humble
I think the truth is that we don't know
For sure, many things points to a price going up: institutional capital inflow enabled by this ETF, halving, holders not planning to sell, normies having a way to easily invest in Bitcoin
But at the same time, it is not impossible that it actually is priced in. The information is out there, there was a futures ETF available already, I'm unsure what the... the difference is, there are spot ETFs in other countries like Canada, cannot institutional money buy those, if they wanted?
I guess we need to... wait and see... Stack sats anyway, stay humble, secure our stack...
I guess... I'd love to see Bitcoin 10X but I don't want to be disappointed so I count on it to at least beat inflation over the longer term.
Even that isn't guaranteed but very likely, I hope. And if it beats my expectations, amazing.
I'd love the optionality and freedom that being rich may give me.
Happy new year everyone!

Happy New Year
Thank you
Bookmarked
I will gradually move to freedom tech next year
And I will use your content as a guide
I keep thinking, to what extent does it matter
In other words, what am I protecting myself from, if I, let's say, use a degoogled phone?
That Google will know my interests to show me targeted ads? I don't care, I actually prefer to see relevant ads if I have to see ads
That Google will delete my account one day because they dislike something I said online? That would be bad, but by far less likely and, I can protect myself from this, I think, simply by having backups of my data and an email address in my own domain, using proton mail or alike, right?
What else can Google do to me? Denounce me to a dystopian government for being interested in Bitcoin, do that they can try to confiscate it? Sure but, first of all, hopefully extremely unlikely, and secondly, it's "too late" already. I'm signed up in Gmail to many Bitcoin newsletters. They already know.
So, maybe it's OK to stay with Google, for all it's convenience, etc?
And just have a private email in my domain and backup my contacts, files and photos?
Thoughts? I guess I'm looking for an optimal setup, the right balance for me, between the convenience of big tech vs freedom and privacy of the freedom tech
I'll appreciate any comments you may want to share
Thanks for everything you do
I find your materials very helpful in educating myself
The latest NostrNet update is now live, it includes:
New ScreenTime feature for analyzing your usage.
Full Nostr Backup service support, essentially making it a part of NostrNet.
It's Inbuilt lightning wallet also got updated.
Now I have to go with my friend, Happy New Year 🤗
Install NostrNet: https://app.nostrnet.work
The rename from Nostr net to web core is legit? It is still the right app, your app, right?
Happy new year everyone
Thank you Derek for what you do
Ok, thanks a lot, exciting, and so, for now, I'm standing by. All the best.
Ending the year off strong!
Over the last few months, we've been preparing our wallet for Fedimint integrations. Today marks the first release with Fedimint support ready for alpha testing!

Fedimint is software for managing federated custodian funds. It's similar to the trust model of Liquid but better privacy and without a blockchain involved. It also has first-class support for Lightning.
The way we've gone about the integration is to seamlessly smooth over the edges that exist in self-custodial Lightning. Our hybrid approach will use a configured Federation when needed. Otherwise, it uses self-custodial Lightning if it exists for the user. This helps things like channel reserves, channel minimums, high chain fees to get started, etc.
You may add a Federation alongside your existing wallet or start with one without needing to open channels or pay on-chain costs. We recommend keeping the value low since this is a very early release, and there are some known features that we still need to develop.

It should feel and act like the same Mutiny Wallet with some caveats around backups for now.
A massive shoutout to the Fedimint team for their recent v0.2 release. It's still early for them and us, so all testing and feedback is welcomed! This does rely on having a federation invite code. We suspect that, over the next few weeks and months, more mainnet federations will pop up. There is not a default one built into the wallet.
We should also have Lightning Address support in a few weeks that works through federations. Kody has already started that work, and it seems promising: https://github.com/Kodylow/hermes
Also, there's beginning work on supporting the Lightning Service Provider Specification, which will eventually allow more plug-and-play support for any LSP to power Mutiny. This will be huge for more advanced node runners as the spec matures. Huge shoutout to John Cantrell for that work.
A lot of core infrastructure has been built into this release. Let us know if there are any problems; it should be identical to previous versions if you do not configure a Fedimint or different LSP.
Expect much more to come soon. Happy new year!
Thank you for building this.
May I ask for some guidance on where to start, if I want to play with it?
Install Mutiny Wallet, I guess and, then what?
And, what's exactly in it again? Lower fees? Better privacy?
If I have some sats today in Phoenix wallet on lightning, can I send them to Mutiny without an on-chain fee?
Thanks a lot.
And I hope it will defund different governments more or less evenly. Why?
Because otherwise, if a better government that adopts Bitcoin, it cannot tax people via inflation anymore, while some other, likely worse government still can, to fund the military, isn't there a risk of war, a risk that the governments that accept Bitcoin are invaded by ones that don't?
Invaded by stronger armies because they were able to steal more money, to fund the military, via inflationary tax?
Scary scenario where a better governments lose.
Of course I'd still hope that better governments mean more freedom, innovation, and so better defense technologies, etc. But still...

Do you know a place where a could buy Liquid? Ideally no KYC.
I mean buy liquid, L-BTC, directly, to my green liquid wallet.
So that I could buy liquid weekly, with very low fees, and, every two months or so, peg out to Bitcoin and send to cold wallet.
Possible? Makes sense?
Thank you.
my recommendation is hiring a cheap but decent VPS from somewhere outside jurisdiction and installing wireguard on it
if you are handy with the linux shell it's easy using this:
https://github.com/angristan/wireguard-install
once you set up the one on the VPS, you can add a client, and for mobile devices it conveniently generates a QR code, which the mobile WG client can quickly add a new connection with
my experience is that less well known IP addresses don't get messed with so much by web server spam filtering systems
probably best to use tor to establish the accounts on these sites to make sure the payment servers don't tag you - the service I use has LN support via btcpay, which is pretty much anonymous as XMR would be, for those who think XMR is the bees knees, LN over tor is actually better because it doesn't leave a permanent trace on the blockchain at all
i'm not so concerned about them knowing who i am, but even still they have bogus details in their database and i'm in control of at least my part of the VPN's logging on the wireguard side
Thanks a lot for sharing this setup.
Do you think it's going to work on Open BSD?
It is not listed in the list of supported distributions.
I'm running a Bitcoin node, pruned, on Vultr, on Open BSD, for $5 a month.
I selected Open BSD for low resources needs, high security and low maintenance reasons.
If I could also try my own VPN on it, it would be nice.
Yeah, that's another great one.
I can also recommend Aristocracy of Action, that is less depressing with a more clear cut solution.

Thank you.
I'm reading it now.
I'm reading the "How to end wars" book.
Enlightening.
And depressing.
I have a test wallet, created long time ago, just to play with, with $15 worth of Bitcoin today.
Looks like, with current fees, it is lost, it's a dust now, too bad.
I lost some sats. Unless fees go down again.
I got some learning.
