Tomorrow morning, when you wake up. Hit the snooze for the next 10 mins and sit up in your bed. Close your eyes, and stare into the darkness… which isn’t really dark. Keep your vision wide and just watch the shimmering behind your eyelids. Breathe.
The moment you find yourself lost in thought, come back to the visual shimmering and the sensation of your breath.
Don’t get frustrated if you find your mind drifting off. Catching yourself lost in thought *is* the practice of this #meditation technique.
Reading is what always lets me know I’m in the dream state. The text appears all squiggly and incomprehensible.
It’s like my brain can think of all sorts of unresolved fears, or new and interesting situations for me to make sense of, like all of the sudden I’m building a go-kart with my ex-landlord (for Mitch Hedberg fans 😉).
But my brain cannot, CANNOT, give me something to read…and then have me read it.

I recently had a layover in #DetroitAirport in my way back. When I was walking to find my gate a noticed a statue of someone name McNamara, for some reason I remembered the name, 3 days later, I’m reading #AlexGladstein book #hiddenRepression, and suddenly I found out who this Robert McNamara was, “the most transformative person in world bank history” famous for massively expanding its lending and sinking poor countries into inescapable debt.

Your eyes, as a sensory organ, never stop functioning. Try closing them and notice that your eyes are still seeing light and sending electro-chemical impulses to your brain. With closed eyes, you can still see a shimmering.
There is no boundary there. No edge. Your experience of your head and body are just a sensation. You can’t see anything. You can only feel a cloud of sensations: temperature, sound, itching, pulsing, tightness, etc.
Now open your eyes. Can you still experience that cloud of sensation?
This is what’s happening in this moment. From moment to moment. Ever changing. Feel it.

Even when you examine certain choices you make, you may find that there’s very little of “your” identity there.
Did you create the parameters around behaviors you call “instinctive”? No. Such actions are instinctual *precisely because* you don’t have to make a choice to commit them. They were somehow pre-determined, either biologically or culturally.
Can you choose your next thought? When will it start? When will it end? Where is its middle?
You are not the chooser of your thoughts. You do not create them. They come and go on their own. They aren’t “you.” They are part of a process you are able to observe.

Consistency is key. Just a few minutes, done regularly as a part of your daily routine.
Sit down (in a chair is fine).
Back straight.
Softly gaze into the empty space about 3 inches away from the tip your nose.
Breathe.
Pay attention to the beginning of the inhale.
Pay attention to the beginning of the exhale.
Pay attention to the space at the top of the inhale, just before you start to exhale.
Don’t force anything. Just breathe naturally.
Pay attention to the space at the bottom of the exhale. Can you feel your heart beat before you begin to inhale again?
Whenever you feel yourself being pulled into the past or future, each time you notice that your mind has wandered, you are strengthening your ability to maintain and regain focus.
The goal is to direct your attention on whatever you want, dampening down emotional and cognitive reactivity. This is a superpower. It allows you to focus on the things you want to be attending to, rather than be distracted by things that do not fucking matter.
