Baaaaaaaa!

I lived out there for 6 months. Super happy to be back in the Big Smoke.

Mind you, by international standards most of our "big cities" are medium-sized towns. I've got a tree-lined river, and a tree-lined gully, and a giant tree-lined park, all within a few minutes walk of my house.

Times like this I feel blessed to live in a place that's naturally rainforest. Love and hugs to everyone affected by this LA fire. This fire brought to you by lobbying and PR funding from climate change obfuscators. Kick an oil company CEO in the arse today!

I've tried it. Always end up moving back into town. I love the peace and quiet for a day or 2, then I find myself craving company and stimulation and spending even more time online that usual 😋

It's easy to fall into believing that things like that happen to you because you're weak or useless. It's not true. They happen because some people are deeply broken fuckwits, who lack both compassion and integrity.

You are showing trendous strength and courage, both by setting hard boundaries to protect yourself, and by sharing this deeply personal story so openly. Respect.

Ummm... pass? The website would be the place to find that info. I've seen it mentioned in a few places I hang out online, but I live on an island in the Pacific and I'm broke, so no chance I'll be going to either FOSSDEM or OFFDEM sadly.

My impression is that it's more of an unconference. Broadly about non-corporate digital tech, schedule and session topics to be determined by those present.

This speaks volumes of the cultural differences between different social networks. On the fediverse I routinely see peopy begposting that they can't afford rent this week, with a link for donations.

People may or may not choose to donate. I seldom do, because I'm broke myself, and I usually don't know the people making the request from a bar of soap. But it seems like people often get the help they need, and no one makes entitled comments like the ones you quote.

Thanks for the recommendation. Imagine I just walked out of the forest, and I hadn't used a computer for about a decade. What advice/ HowTo link would you give me to guide me through setting this up?

I'm using Amethyst on an old Android, installed from F-Droid.

I watched the video. Lovely as the narration was, I definitely would have preferred to read it as a blog post, with a few diagrams as necessary. I suggest that if you put the video up on a decentralised video platform, include a transcript in the description field, for those who prefer to read rather than watch/ listen.

FYI PeerTube channels can also be subscribed to using podcast apps, and some like AntennaPod can even show the video!

Anyway as to the content, I admire what you're trying to do, and it probably makes sense within the existing political-economic situation. I wish you the best of luck with it.

Personally, as I said in my initial reply, I think the advertising indusry is, as the old saying goes, all over bar the shouting. I think the future is in better search tools that can help people find the businesses they need, or the creations they might enjoy or otherwise benefit from. Without having them pushed into their awareness while they're looking at something else.

Perhaps it has something to do with having ADHD, so keeping my attention on one thing is a struggle at the best of times 😆

The more I learn about nondualism, the more sense this makes to me. As a young atheist I just wrote it off as typical religious self-denial. When I drifted into monism, as a result of hanging out with lots of new age travellers, it seemed that to decentre the self was to reject the universal ocean of which I assumed it was a part.

Now I start to realise that the idea of a "self" as a consistent object operating on other objects is an illusion. So, I start to understand the tao as a representation of dynamic equilibrium, of constant change. Not as a monist container of the Ten Thousands Things.

But you know, the tao that can be spoken is not the eternal, ever-changing tao, so who knows? 😋

With PeerTube - which uses the same ActivityPub protocol used by Mastodon and PixelFed - you can either set up your own server, or create an channel on an existing one with compatible values;

https://instances.joinpeertube.org/instances

A friend of mine hosts his videos on a site called odysee.com that was set up to demo another protocol called LBRY;

https://lbry.com/

I don't know much about the underlying tech. In the process of looking it up, I just discovered that LBRY Inc. closed down last year, after an SEC ruling went against them. Obysee is still going, but according to their Wikipedia article they're transitioning to another protocol called ARweave.
