EU age verification app to ban any Android system not licensed by Google
The EU is currently developing a whitelabel app to perform privacy-preserving (at least in theory) age verification to be adopted and personalized in the coming months by member states. The app is open source and available here: https://github.com/eu-digital-identity-wallet/av-app-android-wallet-ui.
Problem is, the app is planning to include remote attestation feature to verify the integrity of the app: https://github.com/eu-digital-identity-wallet/av-app-android-wallet-ui?tab=readme-ov-file#disclaimer. This is supposed to provide assurance to the age verification service that the app being used is authentic and running on a genuine operating system. Genuine in the case of Android means:
ā¢ The operating system was licensed by Google
ā¢ The app was downloaded from the Play Store (thus requiring a Google account)
ā¢ Device security checks have passed
While there is value to verify device security, this strongly ties the app to many Google properties and services, because those checks won't pass on an aftermarket Android OS, even those which increase security significantly like GrapheneOS, because the app plans to use Google "Play Integrity", which only allows Google licensed systems instead of the standard Android attestation feature to verify systems.
This also means that even though you can compile the app, you won't be able to use it, because it won't come from the Play Store and thus the age verification service will reject it.
The issue has been raised here https://github.com/eu-digital-identity-wallet/av-app-android-wallet-ui/issues/10 but no response from team members as of now.
In short: You can only be a full citizen of the EU if you accept the ToS from Google.
So waitā¦ the EU want to force you to download apps from the Google Play Store, after they just forced Apple to allow side-loading of apps??? š¤£

Haha, I have a funny ārunning awayā story that took me from Oxford to the Isle of Wight.. hitched down there with a friend (this is maybe 42 years ago)ā¦ got over to the isle and it was dark. Had no idea where we were, so pitched the tent. In the morning, stuck our heads out of the tent to find ourselves in the middle of a roundabout outside sainsburys or similar. Packed up, got over the water somehow and jumped on a train back to Oxford.

Have you checked out the Legacy access feature of Bitwarden? You can add your family/kids, and if something happens to you, they can request access. If you are still living, you can approve or reject the request, but if you are incapacitated (or worse) they would receive access to the vault.
We gave access to certain bitwarden entries containing copies of required documents to one of the kids when we went overseas recently, but she also has legacy access to the whole account and could request access should anything have happened to us

Itās straight forward enough to use, and has been working really well. The NWC side of it is simple, offers multiple NWC connections if you choose, for example, per app. This has been the first time I felt it was simple enough for less-tech users. Am looking forward to its release.
Iām assuming thereās a test Android version available if youāre an Android user, but recommend giving it a try if you want something that seems to work, and integrate, smoothly.

FYI, nsec.app in safari has a āConnect Appā option. Under āadvancedā, you can copy the bunker url, and this seems to work well. Just tried it with 0xChat.
I think it depends on the device. For example, uploading a photo from an iOS device shows if location etc is included, and lets you turn it off.
This image should have no meta data with it. Hopefully š¤£
