this new year is a very special new year for me. 🥹

growing up in a tiny farm town, my mother never let our Asian show through. she knew we'd run into enough trouble in middle school with all the other rednecks...

the one thing that kept us close to our heritage was lunar new year celebrations. every year, my dad fed the entire community throughout the day, dropping off all their favorite Asian American classics with a big smile, and at night we would have the whole restaurant staff, nearby asian restaurants, and family/friends fill up the red and gold decorated space for an evening of fun conversations of the future and traditional Chinese foods.

i always choose to sit as far away from the glaring fish head as possible. lol, but as close to the microphone as possible. because I loved when my dad would choose me to hand out all sorts of little gifts to various people around the tables.

as a kid, you always looked forward to this event because of the excitement of stacking little red envelopes throughout the night. all the elders would hand them out with a little head bow and smile. since we weren't allowed to open them until the full moon, we'd try to judge the smile for insight into how much money the envelope held.

At the end of the night, my little brother and I would always try to guess who would be richer into the new year. We never dared open the envelope, for we were told we'd lose all the money and luck it held for us if we opened it too soon.

I look back, only now, realizing how genius this simple annual practice was for lowering our time preference while instilling deeply rooted respect for our traditions. ❤️

this year is so special to me because it feels like a coming of age.

this year, I am the one handing out little red envelopes, smiling with the secret lucky knowing. I get to share my excitement with the kids and trick them with little chocolate golden coins. I get to be the one to spook them into hodling the luck I've magically instilled inside the little envelope.

I just wrapped up another fascia focus class in my community, where even though I was the youngest (by far) in the room, I still had the opportunity to share this tradition. I could not think of a better way to raise the fundamental standards of a community so simply and so subtly other than this.

"Here's your little lucky lunar gift from me... but can you wait for it- knowing it will bring you great luck if you do? " 🧧

next year, I will have seed phrases in little red envelopes. that will be the real test! hahaha #bitcoin 🪷

Since i use graphene, its not as simple as just signing in to apple or google, and all your stuff is magically there. But i would never go back to either of those.
