I have some things to say about free speech; I'm free to say it but I do not have the right to be heard.

Subtle but yuuuge difference, and it applies to Bitcoin. Smol speech...

FREE SPEECH is a property of society (not Bitcoin, not X, not any property or platform) to let truth rise and prevent tyranny.

Its purpose is to enable you to speak freely without fear or coercion or punishment by an authority.

This way, truth isn't stifled, and peope are not gaslit towards tyrannical rule (see Orwell's writings).

Free speech is not a thing where you have a right for your voice to be heard or amplified.

Everyone has the right to speak, but no one has the right to be heard.

This is consistent with the non aggression principle (imagine being told that it is the law that you have to read a book or write particular things in a book said by someone).

Only a coercive authority power can stifle speech in society. The authority power makes up the rules and breaches human rights by making arbitrary laws against citizens "for their own protection". To limit there unethical power, we must uphold and fight for free speech.

If Elon for example, mutes a topic on his platform, he has the right to do that because X is his private property. You don't have the right to tell Elon which voices should be amplified or muted. But if the government does it and he obeys then that is interference of free speech.

Also, if people are being thrown in jail by the government for saying things on X, or anywhere, that is against free speech.

Now Bitcoin...

Bitcoin is designed to be money, and you are free to want that and fight for it.

Other people want it to be something else, you are free to fight that, or it becomes something you don't want.

Bitcoin is not a representation of free speech, it's a representation of your property rights.

Someone is shitting on your lawn, and you are respecting their rights to do it. You don't need to consider free speech and censorship here.

Censorship is actually part of the CONSENSUS RULES. Eg double spending is not allowed.

A free speech advocate who is misinformed might incorrectly say that his speech is being thwarted for not being allowed to double spend. You see how that logic breaks apart?

Bitcoin is not a free speech platform, Is it carefully consensus-censored environment (not authority censored) to enable money transactions without the possibility for anyone to stop it.

When we say Bitcoin is censorship resistant, it's referring to the inability for an authority to stop a payment. Not the ability for anyone to do whatever they want and shit on the Bitcoin lawn.

Stand up for what you want, run Parmanode, and install Bitcoin Knots with it (the default).

Umbrel is completely shit and supports shitcoinery. Also if you switch from Core to Bitcoin Knots with it, you'll have to redownload all the blocks.

Instead flash Parmanode on the micro SD card and import your Umbrel drive so that you don't have to redownload the blockchain when you install Bitcoin Knots.

You can also get a ready-made ParmanodL with Knots which is a wallet and node laptop in one, that is already built and fully synced.

Hello everyone! I want to share my opinion on how much a node or multiple nodes in the #Bitcoin #LightningNetwork can earn for their owners, using the example of my own nodes. I will provide the figures as an annual percentage.

Currently, over approximately five days, the entire network of my nodes earns about 500,000 satoshis per day on average. This is an average parameter. 500,000 satoshis is 0.005 bitcoins.

The liquidity on my side across all nodes is roughly around 300 bitcoins. So, let's simply calculate the annual percentage. You can roughly calculate it like this: 0.005 bitcoin multiplied by 365 days divided by 300 bitcoins. Multiply by 100%, and it comes out to about 0.6% profit from fees, which are currently at 700 ppm + 1 sat base fee.

This formula does not take into account the costs for opening channels, which include on-chain fees for Bitcoin channel opening transactions, nor does it include various expenses related to channel closures, whether automatic or forced, cooperative or forced. We are just taking the net figure as if the same channels were open all year without any expenses. You should also consider the risks associated with annual node maintenance. These include hosting costs, creating backups, labor efforts, and the risks of node hacking, which could theoretically be hacked and have all funds stolen.

Is this a profitable venture? You decide for yourselves. I just wanted to share some useful information with you.

Goodbye!

3 types of ⚔ nodes

Having run lightning nodes since early 2019, it's been great to watch the network grow, stumble, flourish, struggle and evolve .. my personal view is that there are three broad types of nodes now, and if you want to run a lightning node then be very clear about which sort before you start:

PlebNodes: Sovereignty, privacy and p2p connectivity

Run for sovereign access and control with two types of channels:

1. 2-4 channels with other *known* node runners - people who have got their shit together and keep their node up and/or let you know when/why it will be down; other plebs you know/trust; and ..

2. 1-2 channels into very well connected nodes that give you - and your plebpeers - much broader connectivity to the rest of the network

RoutingNodes: Connectivity and economic return

Larger nodes (measured by channels and channel capacity), that tie up significant capital (such as nostr:nprofile1qyt8wumn8ghj7etyv4hzumn0wd68ytnvv9hxgtcpvemhxue69uhkv6tvw3jhytnwdaehgu3wwa5kuef0dec82c33denh2mtvw9kh2uek0p4hymtkwejk2drevvmhxamg895rgattxam8quf5v3j8gdmpxf48gantvvery7fsv9ehyum9xdc8v0mzwfhkzerrv9ehg0t5wf6k2qpqngumlqmus6xkrmvvee4yc7swh9h4uk7vpq4ddt7a2jtvkc22y0as8a7mmt - see below) and have a very broad reach across the network. They have resilient infrastructure, knowledgeable operations, are reliable, and economically keep their head above water at least at a nominal level

LightningServiceProviders: Enablement, connectivity and return

Like RoutingNodes, competently run and highly reliable with significant capital, and various service layers/offerings that enable applications and other services to utilise lightning reliably without having to deal with lots of the underlying technicalities. Like RoutingNodes, they need to make a return on capital and operational costs to remain viable.

They're all important, and they each have quite different objectives, costs, risks and competency requirements. If you're curious about lightning I'd strongly recommend having a go! You'll learn loads, and using Zeus on your phone, connected to your own lightning node, whilst you're out and about at home, or travelling across the world is amazing and empowering!

ā€œFree markets naturally dismantle concentrated powerā€ .. pretty much the definition of market competition

The ā€œclass warsā€ are perhaps more accurately phrased as the incumbents vs the innovators; this tension/conflict is the natural order of things .. May it never end!

It’s excellent for navigating legal, regulatory and accounting BS as well

We just did a whirlwind 3 week stint over at Tassie.

Way too cold for this guy (even pre-winter) but beautiful nonetheless.

Highlights were Port Arthur, Bay of Fires, Hobart and the view from Mt Wellington (we were lucky to get a rare clear day with views of the entire region), and cradle mountain. Throw in wild wombat viewing st Cradle Mountain, seals playing the bay at Bicheno and an intimate penguin tour at Low Head and it shaped up to be pure magic.

And that is not to say the rest of what wasn’t equally spectacular. We tracked where we went on a tourist map…Still plenty we missed.

Is 3 weeks enough? Probably not but we were all ready to come back to the mainland.

Homeschooling took a back seat for 3 weeks as we were go-go-go from sun-up to sun-set. That’s the beautiful thing about home-schooling. The official curriculum can take a back-seat while they learn in the real-world. We ticked off history, geography, science, art, and just about every other subject on the curriculum…

A few pointers if you are planning it:

- Spirit of Tasmania. Book well in advance, the return trip was completely booked out when we looked last year from Feb through to July. Plan ahead and stick to your plan. At one point we contemplated delaying our return trip but it was next to impossible to find a return slot. Also worth getting a cabin so you have somewhere private to chill, regardless of night sail or day sail. The seas can get pretty rough (though we were pretty lucky)

- Travelling with doggo. It’s a 10-12hour sail. You can book a kennel in the ventilated decks. We chose however to keep doggo in the caravan. Warm, comfortable and we gave him a chill-pill from the vet. He handled it like a champion.

- Have an idea where you will stay and do day trips. A lot of Tassie is small windy roads and sometimes a lot of dirt. You don’t want to necessarily tow a caravan everywhere through all this. Time of year will also make a huge difference, these roads can be quite treacherous for the uninitiated (like me) through winter.

- be ok with the fact you won’t see it all.

- the windy roads will make for slower travel, expect an 50km drive to take an hour and a half. If you were in doubt about replacing your break pads before you leave, do it.

Did not have you shit-posting ā€œMaps of Tassieā€ on this years bingo card .. but here we are 🤪
