Not sure to be honest. Only pacifist country in the world so no military cost. However it is very socialist and has big social policy stuff that costs a lot and the actual income tax is not that high really. Top bracket 25% I think. A rico friend explained it like this “you want to live a relatively simple life, tax is low, you want luxuries, you pay more tax and that’s what’s used to help bump up budget for health care for all and stuff so the system is geared that those who consume more, pay more”
Personally, I think the complexity and high level of import duties holds the country back quite a lot.
42% on starter motors. 2 years ago mine and my missus car’s one went same bloody month. Around 1300usd. Freaking starter motors!
Hmm better answer is I think it’s partially market. Import duties in CR are huge apart from books. Average is probably 30% depending on item. Local production is agriculture and medical equipment so most stuff is imported. After taxes etc everything is pricey and too expensive for most people so many importers simply stick to what the market can take. I picked some ram up in USA last time I was there. Everyone generally asks around friends when they leave the country and mule stuff in. Tarrifs? You ain’t seem shit!
Just is what it is. That’s what’s available. Have to order internationally for more
Cant get more than 16GB RAM in Costa Rica. Chill, shit takes time!
Panicked, ran out and stacked at local ATM. All good but got home late and had angry missus. Sacrifice is sometimes necesary in moments of opportunity 🤪
Very generous zap. Will pass on to devs. Thank you. Although I work as a geologist, am very specialised so commonly useless on a lot but if you ever have any questions, feel free to throw them my way. It is a really interesting subject. Learn bitcoin to find out how human society works, geology for the natural stuff and you got most covered!
Bitcoin has a tendency to kill our heroes
Looking forward to it. Could do with the work!
I get it. It’s just a little detail. It’s interesting to see flows of crude as it’s all dependent on what crude a refinery can actually handle. Not all refineries are the same and they can’t handle the same types. It’s more complex than just drilling
Is the Alaskan crude heavy enough? It’s a good point. Large conventional reserves.
One on the left is a colour gradient contour map of subsurface geological rock layers where blue is the shallower. Thats the 2D representation of one layer visible in the 3D model. So what you are seeing here is actually an ancient reef structure that was drilled into years ago for oil production. It's ripe for some horizontal wells placed within the producing zones to extract more of the oil in place. Due to oil being lower density than water, both of which are present in rocks, one looks for structures like this with a non permeable rock above one with porosity. The oil will then build up and accumulate within the structure and be trapped, creating a reservoir
Nice pinnacle structure mapped. Great potential! #geology #POW

They’re all departments of endless pointless jobs. Just hope that doesn’t include the safety side.
Fun fact, after the end of Soviet Union, a company created a clever excavator to basically scrape of layer of top soil and sand and extract the spilled oil from it for use in an area of Azerbaijan. When they got the contract, share price rocketed as they booked millions of barrels of reserves instantly. I saw that area when driving out to a rig. Trust me, recommend keeping a few rules around
As a foreigner, I certainly don’t know the ins and outs on how that works. Working offshore USA I know BESEE or whatever manages the drilling standards but not sure onshore. Should that come under DOE, it’s something to be careful about cutting. That’s all am saying. Safety standard drop would not be good to see after all the improvements over the past couple decades
Of course. And the people. I have worked with many all around the world and also worked onsite in Venezuela and had a couple of interesting experiences of working somewhere where one’s presence is definitely not desired and made EXTREMELY clear. Doesn’t change the fact that much of the unconventional oil production is a very light crude and that, unless many big upgrades have been made, it requires blending with heavier crudes for processing.
The potential geopolitical implications of a desire for increasing production are rather interesting.
So if it’s drill baby drill, does that mean better relations with Venezuela to ensure sufficient heavy crude to blend for refinery requirements? How does that work out? 🤔

Unleash the free market. One caveat. Strong technical rules on oilfield. You do not want people drilling willy nilly without standards and guidelines
Very long conversation last night. Great couple. She wants to start bitcoin journey, he’s totally FUD on quantum computers and increased supply and quite frankly everything we’ve all heard before. Am hoping for some cool sunset chats on the beach over the next few weeks. Redenominating the understanding of value seems to take time for some! #bitcoin
