I saw your story about the 6-year-old being harassed at the store. It reminded me of what happened last month to Rosy. I was at my momâs house outside Albuquerque, New Mexico (a suburb), and Rosy (now 7.5) walked three blocks from my momâs house alone, just playing. Within minutes a cop came, picked her up and brought her home.
I was likeâŠhmmm. She was three blocks away. The cop told me that âmany people were worried and something could have happened.â (Where we live now, in Texas, Rosy rides her bike a mile to school and to the grocery store.)
The rest of the visit, I asked Rosy to stay within TWO blocks of the house, and she was approached by three more people âconcernedâ about her safety during the week we were there.
Holy smokes! I told my mom, âSo Rosy is basically a prisoner in this house.â MeanwhileâŠ. Many children have absolutely no restrictions on what they look at or engage with online. So porn, suicide, eating disorders, violence â but not playing two/three blocks from a house in a middle-class suburb. I think we are growing more backwards in our thinking.

Suffering is inescapable. Itâs intrinsic to be human.
We donât do our children any favors by pretending otherwise. We donât do ourselves any favors by pretending otherwise.
Iâm not saying that we go out of our way to show them suffering or make them suffer. But when it knocks on the door, we shouldnât always be protecting them from it.
Love long enough and you will suffer.
Life is about figuring out how to handle the suffering wisely and nobly. And meaning is found in working to transcend and ameliorate that suffering.
If you really internalize this then you will reject victimhood. When terrible things happen you wonât fall into âwow is me.â Youâll be as prepared as possible and will view it as a necessary part of life. (The hard thing, for me at least, is internalizing this. It takes constant work.)

Iâm finally feeling better after a savage bout of strep. Three days of misery. I took two days in a row off from school. The only other time I did that because I was sick was when I had Covid - and that was only because I was mandated to quarantine.
The worst part about missing school, aside from having to write sub plans when you feel like crap, is that when you start to feel better you have to tackle the avalanche of work that built up while you were gone.
Wish me luck this weekend. đ
