Last night I had a very vivid dream. I was walking through my old high school looking for my kids and on the history hallway I saw a huge sign that said NOSTR in big purple letters. I was surprised that it was on the wall of a high school and equally impressed. As I followed the wall I saw pura vida and a MASSIVE Ark filled with purple nostriches. Then it said love paved the way to freedom. As a spiritual person I often look into the meaning behind my dreams. I can only assume that we are at a critical pivot in history and the building that takes place now will be shared for generations to come. I’m proud and honored to be here with all of you.

Yeah, I mean you can set it at 20 sats, which is about 1/10 of a penny. Doesn't take much to stop the bots. And many you could do a thing where you add them to a whitelist after their first message if they aren't a spammer.

However, it's collapsed into a centralized reality of major operators. Not only due to spam but as mentioned in this thread, running an email server today is not really possible because everyone thinks you're spam, and you have no way to prove otherwise.

If DM spam becomes a problem, How about a client feature where someone can charge a fee to get a DM

I think it can be done at the client level in a way that doesn't matter what client the other person is using.

-Person sends a message to me

-My client autoreplies with an invoice at an amount I set

-that person pays it

-my client then allows me to see message.

Since on his end the payment is entirely through DM, it should work no matter what client he uses.

Well, if you were creating a system from 0, you could do that, make it so all npubs could only send so much. But nostr already exists, I can't alter THEIR clients but perhaps I can alter mine to require such. It would probably be on the client level and not need any protocol change, just when you attempt to send something a invoice would pop up at an amount you set

It would be great for newsletters to come either to my feed and @ me, so I don't miss it. Orrrrrr, just nostr DM me. At the moment nostr DMs aren't dead and useless yet. Like emails are.

Will there be blacklisted relays the way there are blacklisted... whatever 'zones' in IP addresses are called. Let's make it so we don't recreate the same system. (that story about that guy that ran his own email server for 40 years and had to stop because he was ALWAYS filtered out as spam.)

There seems to be some dismissal of PoW as a part of Nostr resisting spam which is very disruptive to the ability for hobbyist users to run relays or for users to enjoy an experience using Nostr to meet people. I'm quite disappointed that PoW has basically been ignored even as one of the earlier NIPS proposed.

Paid-Only relays create walled gardens which harms the user experience. We need to maintain an open global protocol and spam is still a problem if we don't wall ourselves off in paid and divided gardens. It seems to be that we're hoping public relay operators and clients are going to implement filtering that is invisible to users and done by policy that is undeclared, taking on the same role of the institutions we're fleeing from, Twitter and Facebook, etc.

Proof of Work is not about who has the resources. Spammers do have plenty of resources, the important bit is cost to rewards. Bot nets have an economic value., and other means of monetization and all Proof of Work has to do is ensure that a bot net is better used doing something else. Users don't have to outcompete a bot net, they just have to make it cost more than it could earn doing something else.

Please keep Nostr open and free and implement PoW at the relays and the clients.

A system for increasing difficulty with frequency might make some sense, but falls flat with considering sybil attacks, i.e. they can always generate new keys at no cost, and keys are how you establish frequency to begin with. However, one could also require difficulty in keys. Mine took a machine that can handle 32 threads over 3 days to find.
