Anyone can tag something as say, hate speech or nudity. Some nostr clients, like the one I use, will automatically block stuff that people I follow have already tagged as
And tags like spammers, are automatically added to the client so they get ignored by default.
It's not perfect, but it does reduce the noise down to an acceptable minimum.
Nostr is a protocol, not a platform. So, there's no rules or server admins deciding what can and can't be used on the network.
There's a heap of things on nostr that can't be bridged to the fediverse. Only basic notes get bridged. That's the only nostr stuff that's compatible with the fediverse.
Long form notes, streaming, communities (reddit clone with moderated subreddits), the marketplace, chat (discord clone), encrypted messages and Bitcoin, lots of Bitcoin getting zapped around on nostr.

Do you mind if I ask how you started with relays?
The reason I ask is, new users shouldn't be getting directed to relays. They are specialized software that most users don't ever need to know anything about. You wouldn't want to start one on an AWS instance. Could get a nasty bill shock even on a free tier. Relays can blow through a lot of data.
A nostr client is what new users should be directed too.
If your first view of nostr was snort.social rather than relay software, I wonder what your first impressions would have been.

Relays by default just blindly relay everything with no censorship. Other than that, they're pretty boring to watch.

Desktop clients are mostly persistent web apps. And there's lots. There's one that makes everything on nostr look like reddit.
Which ever client you use first and create your account with, remember to save the nsec key, it's your account. You use that one nsec key no matter which client you are using.

Nostr is a permissionless protocol, not a client/server system.
No one can ever seize your account or stop you from using the network.
#Nostr doesn't have this problem because it doesn't have servers where some rando owns your account.
Public/private key encryption rather than servers hosting your account is the only way to really be in control.
