This is only partially true. If miners activate a soft fork - say op cat, and no nodes update then you get a chain split. Miners fear this because it would be a massive headache for them and likely reduce their revenues. Admittedly if there is a miner activated soft fork you don’t need a majority of nodes to update, but you do need a significant amount of them. That threshold is unknowable in advance but I’ve heard it theorized around 20-25%.

This is only partially true. Even if there was a successful miner activation of any soft fork, there is a minimum threshold of nodes required to update to prevent a chain split. Miners fear chain splits and would be highly unlikely to push a soft fork that would create one because they would cause big problems and reduced revenue for miners. We saw this play out during the blocksize wars.

I’m willing to keep an open mind and hear the other side out, but even after a lot of researching I still see no reason for OP_CAT over LNHANCE or CTV.

I don’t think that is accurate. Lightning you hold keys to actual Bitcoin and can always unilaterally force it back to the Bitcoin base chain. Liquid you have no actual Bitcoin keys. You cannot force on chain. You have to ask permission to go onchain. You have an IOU on a totally separate and unrelated blockchain that federation can refuse to honor at any time. I don’t think that is more secure or more protective of loss.

The struggle is Liquid is not Bitcoin. It’s a multisig with a completely separate blochain and a hope that you can get actual Bitcoin out when you ask, and the fact that you have to ask is the key problem. Lightning you do not. Doesn’t mean Liquid is evil, but people need to understand you can easily be rugged.

Why would onchain deposits go to the fedimint? I find this confusing an unexpected. I think most if not all users would expect onchain to always end up in your own wallet. This seems likely to cause confusion and drive extra fees to move a second time to true self custody.

For the mutiny+ to enable offline zaps/receives you would point to a specific fedimint, not any traditional domain name. I would read the mutiny wallet account’s post on this topic.

They should worry. Constant hard forks and intentionally breaking things make constant maintenance and vigilance required to access your shitcoins. If you don’t update your Ledger or Trezor firmware for say two years your shitcoins are probably bricked but your Bitcoin will spend just fine.
