You could use a strip down and re-season. Steel wool, dawn soap and elbow grease. Don’t worry about the folks who are scared of soap.

I was going to try this brush that plugs in mtvdrill bit. It is gentle enough to clean and the bristles are plastic.

What's weird about this is that there is actually **SOME** amount of PoW in printing physical paper money.

Only reason I have one of those regular, cheaper woks is to reheat leftovers. My cast iron pan is about 12" wide and 2" deep, makes a lot of food and I have a lid, it's big enough for just about everything I do, so I don't need a wok, I just want one. But I like doing maybe 90% of my cooking with 1 pan. My other cast iron pan is a small one for a single egg. An impulse buy.

What do y'all cast iron cooking people use to season your precious pans? My daily use pan is a pretty darn old 10 1/2" skillet that my dad got me as a birthday present a while ago, and I haven't ever properly seasoned it and would like to do so at this point. I've been watching a bunch of videos on how people are restoring old cast iron, and I'm set on using the oven cleaner in a bag route to get all the crud off, followed by a vinegar soak to take off a bit of rust and etch some of the surfaces to better hold onto the seasoning.

I've been kind of appalled to see how many people suggest various seed oils for seasoning. That's a no-go, IMO. Coconut oil seems to get spotty and polymerize unevenly. Avacado oil seems to work well. I have a good bit of bacon fat, but, that doesn't seem to work as well as other options.

What are your thoughts?

Ive used this pan for over a decade. I think closer to 20 years.

Despite it looking discoloured on the handle it’s just an illusion. It’s all solid black.

Sometimes the ‘Chipping’ is actually a build up of seasoning that gets removed by aggressive scraping.

I’ll strip and preseason my pan maybe once a year with soap and steel wool.

But mostly, unless you’re not cooking semi daily on it. Cast rarely needs to be cleaned if you preheat the pan properly.

As it cools after cooking, dump your extra tallow or oils in a jar and wipe down with a paper towel. This essentially re-seasons a pan after each cook.

I have been cooking with all the different saved oils. What happened was it caked up on the lid, and after things dried, I thought the flakiness was the coating chipping off. I clean it with water maybe twice a year, otherwise just wipe it with paper.
