Not just a right, but a duty; and most of us are not doing our share.

You are too kind to the politician.

More likely thinking about how they can suppress the new product entirely to please established interests.

Only if its already gotten away from them do they start thinking about expropriating the gains.

(Bitcoin is entering that stage right now...)

I really like her too. Strength, dignity, positive attitude.

But man, wouldn't want to be her...

Or Darcy either tbf, but he had a much better start in life until... oops no spoilers!

Jane Eyre's life is objectively terrible. Cinderella, except that Prince Charming is a cad.

The inheritance is pretty sweet, but until that...

I believe you. Won't be visiting to find out!

They only poison the DNS here. That's enough to stop the normie's.

"Low effort Fascism" should be #australia's national motto.

I wish I could say the same!

I get a "phantom space" in front of whatever I'm writing. If I delete it, #amethyst eats the last non-alphanumeric character before the last word.

:(

Bittorrent is easy to disrupt (my govt blocks the popular tracker servers), and easier to monitor.

IPFS over Tor is a much more secure way to share large files.

But yes, developers have been beavering away for freedom! Hats off to #decentralisation and #FOSS!

SWIM might be :-D

I asked Google Bard why Sam was fired and why Greg quit. 👀

The reasons for Sam Altman's firing and Greg Brockman's resignation from OpenAI are complex and multifaceted. There is no single definitive answer, but there are a number of factors that likely played a role in their decisions.

**Sam Altman's Firing**

Sam Altman was fired as CEO of OpenAI on April 14, 2023. The board of directors did not provide a public explanation for his firing, but there are a number of possible reasons.

* **Divergent visions for the future of OpenAI:** Altman reportedly had a different vision for the future of OpenAI than the board of directors. He was said to be more interested in pursuing commercial opportunities, while the board was more focused on maintaining OpenAI's non-profit status and ensuring that its technology was used for the benefit of humanity.

* **Concerns about Altman's leadership style:** Some reports suggest that Altman's leadership style was abrasive and alienating to some employees. This may have led to morale problems within the company and contributed to Altman's firing.

* **OpenAI's financial struggles:** OpenAI has been struggling financially in recent years. It is possible that the board of directors felt that Altman was not doing enough to address these challenges and that a new CEO was needed to bring in new funding and put the company on a more stable financial footing.

**Greg Brockman's Resignation**

Greg Brockman announced his resignation as president of OpenAI on April 15, 2023, just one day after Sam Altman was fired. Brockman's resignation was likely influenced by Altman's firing, as the two were close colleagues and had worked together to build OpenAI from the ground up.

It is also possible that Brockman had his own concerns about the future of OpenAI. He may have shared Altman's vision for the company, or he may have been concerned about the company's financial stability. Whatever the reason, Brockman's resignation was a significant loss for OpenAI, as he was a key figure in the company's development and success.

**The Aftermath**

The firing of Sam Altman and the resignation of Greg Brockman have had a significant impact on OpenAI. The company is still in the process of recovering from these events and is currently searching for a new CEO. It is unclear what the future holds for OpenAI, but the company is at a crossroads and will need to make some difficult decisions in the coming months.

And people say machines aren't intelligent!

That was more cogent and insightful than 99% of journalists out there.

NGL, I think AI will continue to fail to be the idealised AGI every VC and secret police force is looking for.

But so will everyone you work with. AGI doesn't really exist because NI doesn't really exist. Not the way people think it does.

Its not just one bad apple, standards have collapsed across the pharmaceutical industry.

Qubes is very pretty, and offers a familiar windows-like UX. Of course, it includes a f---ton of code to provide that glossy windowing environment.

Its easier to pick up than my favourite KVM+Whonix, but it does have a larger attack surface.

Disposable VMs for the win!

Epic.

That electricity was probably among the most socially useful of the programs the govt pays for!

Human intelligence is a jerry-rigged mess of kludges and poorly optimised heuristics. What we experience as consciousness is a narrative constructed by our frontal lobes to create a sense of predictability and continuity out of the mess of inputs from more specialised and less logical brain areas.

I think the best LLMs are already more intelligent than 25% of the Western workforce.

Thanks for sharing!

Its actually a very interesting book, available for pirating here:

Kaufman may have to join Israel Shahak and Benjamin Ginsberg among my favourite Jewish historians!

"By the 1930s, the Sassoons had been doing business in China for a century, rivaled in wealth and influence by only one other dynasty--the Kadoories. These two Jewish families, both originally from Baghdad, stood astride Chinese business and politics for more than 175 years, profiting from the Opium Wars; surviving Japanese occupation; courting Chiang Kai-shek; and losing nearly everything as the Communists swept into power."

The old UNIX principle:

Software tools should have a clearly defined scope. Software tools should stay in their lane. If a software tool is highly privileged or highly complex, pay particular attention to (1) and (2).

This design principle has lasted the ages because it limits the scope of any particular bug, and it makes it possible to swap out problematic tools in a modular way.

SystemD deviates from that in quite consequential ways.

Then there's its historical management culture.

User: "D00d, when I create a user account called 0day, SystemD comes along and gives it root. Is this expected behaviour?"

Lennart: "WontFix"

https://www.devuan.org/ FTW!

Very, very similar to Debian and Ubuntu, but without PID 1 trying to be God.

Best range of FOSS software, supports everything from old desktops to supercomputing clusters.
