A coffee hipster inna woods with a thing for computers and Bitcoin. Panel speaker at The Bitcoin Rodeo 2023.

I bought an exercise mat with the best of intentions 2 or 3 years ago. Finally took it out of the packaging yesterday. Woke up this morning wondering why I could feel my abs, and realized I hadn't felt that sensation since college nearly 20 years ago. Oi.

Apple espresso! Highly recommend. 1 part espresso (or mokapot, or french press, whatever you have!), 1 1/2 parts apple juice. For extra points you can smoke the glass with the cinnamon stick before adding it to stir with.

Real talk: Are these people wining somewhere, or are they snuggled up with the money printers? You’d think they’d run out of liquidity eventually…

#coffeechain and cast iron.

Short version (maybe long[er] version tomorrow?): I left my day-job and went back to something familiar; freelance I.T. and management consulting. A few months in I decided to do some writing along with it, so my company website now has a blog where I post weekly. You can find it on clearnet at https://scalebright.ca/blog/, or on TOR at http://5axvajgxibxljz3z3np6hqmq4ouqo4vps56d7sihvxvycrmzes6vkgqd.onion. The clearnet version also has audio versions of the posts for those who'd rather listen than read 😉

I've been gone for a bit. Restarting after a burnout crash feels like trying to fire an engine that just...doesn't wanna. So if you see a few posts then nothing again, I'm not gone, just clearing the lines and attempting another restart 😅

Many of us have stories of lost bitcoin. It sucks, and we know the healthy thing to do is move on, but the more "number go up" the harder those memories hit. How much would those sats be worth today? Is there anything I could have done differently? Is there anything I could do now to get them back?

My story involves a Samourai wallet on an Android phone in late 2017. I was working a dead-end retail job and killing time playing around with Samourai and Bisq. I had my seed words on paper and I was playing around with a small amount; what could possibly go wrong?

One day the phone (mostly) died, and I figured a factory reset would squeeze some extra life out of it. I could restore the wallet from the seed words, so no problem there. One reset and 12 words later, no transactions found 💀

I replaced the phone a few months later, but held onto it in case I had a eureka moment and figured out how to recover my lost bitcoin. Every once in a while I'd go down the research rabbit hole in an effort to find a solution, but the closest I ever got was some forum mentions that Samourai, at the time, used some non-standard witchcraft in their app which made it impossible to restore to any other app or wallet software. Oof, I guess that corn is gone forever. But I just couldn't bring myself to get rid of that phone or the paper with the seed words on it. And those objects continued to taunt me ever time I saw them.

And now the story has reached it's end. The phone is going to be recycled, and the paper thrown out. Because this afternoon, while 1/2 way through a bottle of French rosé, I MANAGED TO RESTORE THE WALLET!

I had suspected there was a BIP39 passphrase involved, but none of the usual suspects I'd tried had worked. I'd made lists of every password I could think of and tried them all. But today, for whatever reason (maybe French rosé reasons?) a password half-way down my list worked.

It's not an earth-shattering amount of bitcoin, but the emotional weight of solving the mystery and un-derping a big derp has been lifted. I think I'll celebrate with some more rosé while I watch the mempool and will the transaction fees to drop below 100 sat/vB 😅

GM #coffeechain, I’m still at the 9-5, but Christmas break is soon(ish). Hopefully the break keeps me from snapping before my end date of April 30th 😬🤞🤞

Excel just autocorrected “APs” to”Aps”, and I can’t tell you how much I don’t want it to autocorrect anything ever. It’s bad enough that it wants to turn everything into a date.

TFW naming conventions get out of hand 😵‍💫

In for socks too, especially if I can get them with a wide toe box. My Darn Toughs are great but “sport fit” is basically just fancy talk for “toe crusher” 😅

At a restaurant it’s about $4CAD / 7,800sats for a domestic brand. Some places the average is closer to $6CAD / 11,700sats though…

Figured out what was wrong with the Start9 node after looking through alby.log; TOR was being slow and timing out part way through. Can’t wait to get on fiber and leave these satellite issues behind 😅

Trying to zap and Alby is throwing errors. When connected to my Umbrel node the error is "no_route". When connected to my Start9 node it times out. Google returns very little, and nothing helpful.

Anyone here using a non-custodial solution other than Alby to zap?
