Violinist and teacher, building a homestead on raw land in between lessons and concerts. Fascinated by how we can develop resilience in our lives, in our families, in our communities. I'm excited about freedom tech and circular economies, and am deeply grateful for the devs and advocates who are helping build tools for a better future.

whoa - is this real??

Also, what's FTT? (I just looked it up ... Free to talk? Flush the toilet? Failure to Thrive, Free Territory of Trieste, Friday the thirteenth?)

Anyone cheering on mass killings is also so deeply enmeshed in ideology that they have lost all humanity.

(To be fair, I don't actually see anyone doing this - but then I'm not following most media, and I guess this is actually happening โ˜น๏ธ)

Nice to see you back on here, Whitney

We're keeping our cows in with just one (hot) wire, moving their paddock daily. We know very little about sheep except that Katadhin seem like the ones that make most sense for us and we like the idea of grazing them with the cows. We have more land than the cows can cover, but it's still in a very early stage after years of poor management, so it's a lot of area but not yet a lush pasture that I hope we can someday develop.

When you have free-range chickens and forget to zip up the tent that you live in (and, yes, I grabbed my phone for a photo before shooing her out!)

I'm only now looking at the link. Thank you! I've seen some clips from the Trout recording with Barenboim, Zuckerman etc, but most of that footage I had never seen.

She was something else.

#Musicchain! I hadn't seen that yet.

Would be great if we could develop some nostr improvs together. One of us could lay down a simple track and then others layer on top of it. I'm sure there's a good tech-y way to do that.

I've enjoyed experimenting with some of the agents on PlebAI. Two questions that I'm hoping you could answer:

1) will it be possible to upload images an have the agent add/make changes? (for instance, it would be great to be able to have a pic of what garden/permaculture plantings would look like in 5 or 10 years, but of course I can imagine so many other uses, like generating realistic before/after comparisons for someone who wants to get fit, or make particular changes to a home, etc)

2) not an image question, but boy would it be nice to get tax advice from an agent (detailed questions about deductions, about which forms are required for different situations, etc). Do you have any idea if something like that is in the works? I would think it would be a good revenue stream for anyone who built a solid program

We only discovered this way of making biochar at the very end of last winter, so I'm very excited to make this a regular part of our fires for the next many months. I have retorts lined up under the stove so that the next batches of twigs get dried by the stove and are ready to go by the time it's their turn.

This stove is pretty small - we're in a tent - but I've seen some decent ones on Etsy for less $ than I expected just FYI. I don't know enough about them to make any specific recommendations but once you have a place that will work with a stove, the stove itself might not be a big expense.

It's getting cold enough to start our wood stove, which means we can start making charcoal for biochar as we heat our tent. By the time I took this picture, most off the outer wood had burned down but the container (retort) was going strong. The retort keeps the wood inside burning without much access to oxygen, so the gases burn - those are the intense flames around the lid - but the carbon remains. It's a great way to use some of our fallen twig, it produces a clean, hot burn, and the result will be a wonderful addition to our soil.
