A personal relay should implement the gossip model. Have the client only point to your personal relay, and that forwards to the world and gossips around to fetch notes.

One big difference is the cost for users to follow someone.

In the old world, following a user to a different platform was prohibitively expensive for almost all, as you would lose everything. It goes against the network effect, and a ban from a major platform means people have to follow to a smaller network.

With Nostr, following a user to another relay is almost completely free, and with some elbow grease, can be completely automated away.

Fact is that there has not been a major test in this regard, nobody with a large following has been forced off relays, and if that doesn't happen, this is not a good comparison. Maybe the nature of Nostr is such that this will never happen, as trying to censor people by forcing relay operators to block them is a futile exercise to start with.

Do you have a link to what you discussed with Daniel? Maybe I'm in this too long to not really see the usability issues anymore. When I joined, everything was barely working and one was lucky to not nuke your account and to have anything loading at all. It came a long way in not even 2 years now.

And the beauty is that with Nostr, people can scratch their own itch. If things are not working as expected, some people can actually jump in and fix it. This was always possible with software, and that's why open source software is where it's at right now. But that took decades. And this is the first time something like this is properly possible with a communications network.

Think in years and decades. Not everything can be and has to be fixed now. We have time on our side.
