My husband used to work there. It's not a one dimensional institution. There are a lot of "true believers" who really think they are Doing Good -- and who maybe are like 2/3rds of the time-- there are other interests at play... but there is a surprising amount of workplace "democracy" and meetings and handwringing.
That there are so many people there who believe in the power of journalism just makes the outcomes all the more depressing.

This is exactly how twitter always worked. To see everyone's posts you just needed to log out our use incognito.
And facebook to a lesser extent-- facebook works more the way you describe, since it's all about private groups and smaller and smaller circles where people become uglier and uglier.
Never thought that being able to hide posts was a good thing. Stop them from spreading? Yes. But keep what was said public--
I find it more disturbing that people can make their posts vanish.
To be a predator of a social species such as ants or humans you must not raise alarm. A hoverfly, tricks ants into keeping their larvae. It grows to a monstrous size, discretely feeding on ant larvae. The ants are unable to see it as a threat. Larvae simply disappear.
With our excellent vision the deception is obvious. But, what is also obvious is that the creatures that take advantage of humans would be just as invisible.
Sometimes... people just go missing? Right?

If you like little creatures or #moss you have seen the photographs of @mossworm@tumblr.com -- long-time poster of remarkable photos of the natural word. Well she is looking for work after a few difficult incidents at the collection she cared for in FL. Here is more info:

She is currently looking for a job something in collections, entomology. Anyone know of anything?
More info on this here. Please help if you can!

Call me crazy but carpenter ants can jump down. That is they will leap, on purpose from a high surface to a lower surface propelled by their back legs. Not quite at the level of Gigantiops destructor, who can jump up and forward... but you can see how it evolved.

Hope is the inverse of nostalgia-- I think that's why I find nostalgia subtilely toxic... and unproductive.
nostr:npub1zdp33shl69xr0uq3x8n5gsjykq9upycwh6nqm02c3f6x0frrn0dq42vqv8 i always thought Lagos and Jo-berg were world cities?
nostr:npub1kr8z9thp2m6pp33h2jdk3gcezklg6a60l7n0whl3qq6puzptwsnqnx8hcd
Lagos maybe? I'd buy that.
This is oppression.
And depressing.
And just plain pressing.
Do NOT Depress Crab.
Free Him!

To see a disease we accepted, cured forever.
To see an inevitable doom, avoided.
To see a tradition of violence, forgotten.
To see a necessary cruelty, made obsolete.
To feel like a relic of a needlessly barbaric past.
Yes, children we really did live like that, full of guilt and self-hate. It was very foolish. I'm so happy it's over.
(But what if-)
Hush! Let me dream-
(But what if-)
Shh!
(What if we never make it there?)
Well? There is the work.
I want to invent... Nostalgia for the Future. Take a moment and reminisce about when your body is old & technology beautiful & terrifying. When you'll catch yourself bewildered at the young. When old music sounds sweet, but (deep down) you know the new songs are better.
I want to keep a catalog, a list, of all the blessings to come. All the victories to come that we, the elderly of the future will call "too far!" Then ache with nostalgia for what will be. To be surpassed!

That's an awful lot of guys just to take out the trash.
Maybe it's heavier than it looks.
The Duke of Cambridge keeps on running his mouth about population growth in Africa of all places.
It's likely that a "World City" will emerge in South Africa or maybe Nigeria. Possibly more than one in the region. Africa has many big cities. But nothing on the order of a New York, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai, São Paulo...
This means population growth. And just like every other region in the world it will have an impact.
The Duke can go bulldoze some London suburbs if he cares about nature.

nostr:npub1r37tvxl8q9ltxhh9nx7luz60r90c08j8wz4qjf9helsfycajzcxssu9saq
This time I didn't think so since she didn't really lie down. My working theory is they rest their body on the ground when they really fall asleep. I think she was just stuck trying to understand why she couldn't find a way off of the strange warm rubbery tree (my hand)
nostr:npub1zdp33shl69xr0uq3x8n5gsjykq9upycwh6nqm02c3f6x0frrn0dq42vqv8 I always wondered if I picked them up: do they lose track of their scent trails and have trouble finding their way back to the colony?
nostr:npub16e7kmgkee537qmduhy2rvj9ch9s552e5yy6te2dfz8w3f3pe047sv5pqcd
Shocking no. As long as you put them back within a few meters of where you found them they will find their way back to a trail and get back home without an issue. They also use landmarks like large rocks and trees to navigate, so they aren't lost if it rains or something ruins the trails.
Look at this big beautiful carpenter ant major from my Camponotus pennsylvanicus colony! I picked her up with the paint brush and just let her wander around on my hand for a bit. She's so gentle and curious.

Forcing everyone to use "dark mode" sound like something I would have wanted to do when I was 13 and striving to be angry and goth (and failing)
But I think *even* 13 year old me crying in my room after arguing with my mom about if I could wear lipgloss would have thought "well, making everyone use it is kinda' mean, even if I think it's better..."
What I'm saying is weeping goth teens mid-temper tantrum have more maturity than this.
Here is a fun animation that will help you to understand the relative rpms of the planets.

Institutions like the New York Times have an intense desire to be seen as neutral and rational in the eyes of people who at this point have no respect for them-- and this desire is so important that any harm that might come from legitimizing people who have eliminationist ideas just isn't as important.
It's a kind of affirmative action for conservative ideas only practiced by centrist liberals.
Can you imagine centrist conservatives ever even having such a concern?

When will the NY Post give me a column to write about police abolition, raising taxes, and 999 million bike lanes literally in YOUR living room?
