I've heard the arguments, it just doesn't jive with me.

I will give them credit for having a somewhat private (God knows what GSF is *really* doing, even when sandboxed) implementation that's fully compatible, even with in-app purchases.

The fact that google apps automatically get your google account info even when everything was sandboxed is what gave me pause, and made me want to go back to MicroG.

I want to get back to one of my blog series ideas -- review the #1 pop song for every decade I've been alive (i.e., if I were born in 1985, I'd start in 1980).

I started to look into it, but figured I didn't really have that much to say about pop music, but I'm sure when we get to decades I remember well like the 80s and 90s, I'd have some interesting anecdotes or memories. Unfortunately, my musical knowledge starts dropping off rapidly in the 90s, when I lost interest in popular music.

The C64's "SID" sound chip is utterly insane. I had no idea how powerful it was because most games at the time didn't really know how to fully take advantage of it.

I realized fairly recently that a lot of 90s PC tracker files were actually mimicking the SID sound.

The guy who designed the chip went on to be one of the founders of Ensoniq.

Also, VLC can play .SID files natively, so if you find some online, you can enjoy them right on your machine. (trackers too)

The SID was more powerful than Atari's sound chips, and it's debatable which is better between it and the OPL3-based PC sound cards like the AdLib.

Some folks have made ARM-based SIM emulator chips because the originals are starting to die off.

Or it might just be that little bubble out in the country side where I grew up, and it was big in Oslo, I don't know :p Still amazing all the cool stuff the people did, and do with the C64 :D

I've seen some insane stuff, like re-create the 1993 "Second Reality" PC demo (which required a 486 to run) on the C64. Just nuts.

Also, for a crazy epic DOS demo for very early DOS pcs, check out "8088 MPH" on yt

The dude got *thousands* of colors out of *C*G*A* composite mode. Just bananas.

I dunno, there were a lot in Europe. I know they were particularly popular in the U.K. and Germany.

Hah. I also played some games on my Commodore 64 ;)

There was a defender-like game that was pretty awesome for it. It was full color with iso-style "3d."

Been wanting to get a Switch, but... time. ;)

I still wanna play Super Mario Sunshine, lol. The only consoles I've had are the NES, N64, PSOne, and Wii.

Hey, you complained that I wasn't paying enough attention to your posts, so I made you became one of maybe FOUR people who's posts I follow.

Don't ever think you're not loved. :P

The problem with enjoying 20-year-old TV shows is you get bit hella bad with the maudlin bug.

Thinking about decades past, I feel like the Tenth #Doctor raging before the end of his life/regeneration,

"I COULD HAVE DONE SO MUCH MORE!!"

Live your life, peeps. Don't be a wallflower. Be as bookish as you want, but get out that door and live.

I think what we really need is a "vanilla" VM image that has a very standard firefox install running atop a very ordinary and lean debian install in a VM that gets reverted to base installation each time we use it.

Imagine if *everyone* who knew better used that as their browser. Yeah, go ahead and track us. There's thousands of identical browsers running the same resolution on the same OS on the same vm.

Ah. Great. Custom silicon to establish an encrypted path from the content provider's servers all the way to the LCD firmware. Ugh.

Yeah, I'm debating buying a PinePhone (not pro) just for PMOS.

I might be able to use droidan instead

That doesn't sound like fun.

That said, I still remember bootlegging audio recordings from webstreams circa 2007-2012.

My recordings still have gaps... a great reminder of how poor connectivity was back then, even with decently fast broadband.

...

Edit: Dankon al mia Esperantist amikoj for pointing out that the c is pronounced "ts," and for being good-humored about my silly rant. Much respect to Zamenhof. I still can't imagine using "scii" in conversation and not feel like I'm passing a verbal hairball, but I'm willing to try & learn 😂

Haven't seen techlore's latest video (kinda of befuddling that he's recommending iOS, but whatevs), but have you checked out some of the minimalistic Andrid launchers?

I'm rather fond of "KISS Launcher," but OLauncher is even more minimalistic. :D
