nostr:npub1hemdxvjcfz0zt39ymgxwv77k5vrr4tkk25zzg486e4t8sw5rwyksafrq92 if you google "80x25 mode" the first thing that comes up is VGA text mode, but was found across a range of IBM compatibles. heavily associated with IBM in the popular mind, and what i had in mind. so we're talking computer screens here.
you would emulate non-square pixels because they were intentionally non-square, and to get the right aspect ratio on modern square-pixel systems, you need stretching.
PAL did not have an aspect ratio of 5:4. the screens were 4:3 but the way it's usually encoded digitally (720x576) looks 5:4, i.e. horizontally stretched pixels, as opposed to the vertically stretched pixels of many early computer and gaming systems.
nostr:npub1hemdxvjcfz0zt39ymgxwv77k5vrr4tkk25zzg486e4t8sw5rwyksafrq92 in technical terms, analogue video signals have no pixel count horizontally speaking, so you can't speak of non-square pixels in the analogue domain. but you can definitely say that the screens had an aspect ratio of 4:3.
a digital image doesn't have an aspect ratio until you choose a pixel shape. these days, it's usually square pixels.
if you play games in emulators and they don't get the pixel shape right, stuff will look squished or stretched, which is ugly.

much of the computer terminology we use today originally came from the telecommunications industry. they were connecting people with machines long before the computer industry did.

nostr:npub1wwch2y8ema6khz7yewg8rxlwqp4p7fpckc27c5vhm5n7pt0jy5ps2d8xnt i'm less promoting the idea of tracking and more pointing at why this is so hard for them to give up. there are many small businesses whose livelihoods depend on targeted advertising. and the advertising tools that FB/Google offer are more or less designed for those people.
nostr:npub1wwch2y8ema6khz7yewg8rxlwqp4p7fpckc27c5vhm5n7pt0jy5ps2d8xnt
the most common Facebook/Google customer is a small/medium business owner with a limited budget for advertising. he can't afford to show ads to everyone. to have any hope of being effective on a small budget, he has to target specific groups and Facebook/Google have some really good tools for narrowing that down. it works especially well for niche stuff, because it can be hard to figure out where to advertise to reach the right audience.
they keep tracking because it's really valuable to be able to show exactly the right ad to exactly the right person. it wastes less of everyone's time and money.
if somebody came up with a solution to this problem that works better than using tracking and managed to popularise it, i'm sure businesses would be happy to use it.
big business doesn't really need this kind of careful targeting. they can throw big money at broadcast-style advertising. they typically sell products with broad appeal anyway, so all they need is general exposure.
not really the main group these Internet ad companies are selling ad space to though.
no one ever bothers to render the correct 4:3 aspect ratio for 80x25 text mode in emulators or screenshots. the pixels weren't square. the letters looked tall.
nostr:npub1wm8ssc8g0uqavz7m8xwjxme5e382ufwdeyrkypfc49hpwtu5ellsjf9y43 come to think of it, i ran one too for a little while. probably the first online community i ever tried to set up. but i don't think "online community" was a term we used back then.

i think on some level, she is also very much the same way. very mindful and pays careful attention. so we do that constantly. tending to the other person's needs and watching out for them. this comes at the cost of "simple selfish pleasure" in a way. you can't lose yourself.
one thing that's becoming apparent through this lady i'm seeing is that i'm less sexual than i used to be. connection and intimacy feels more important. i think a lot and this can get in the way of getting sexually immersed. it reminds me of another thing i stopped immersing myself in: movies, television and books. i'm very mindful all the time and rarely forget my surroundings.

"Our final stop at the workshop of specialty costume makers FBFX is their 3D scanning room, where they've invested in high quality photogrammetry rigs to digitize their clients as an alternative to traditional lifecasting. Adam learns how this technology has a high enough fidelity to match the detail of a physical lifecast, and gets 3D scanned himself to have his own digital body form for future cosplay builds!"

my physical condition could be worse. i don't lose my breath climbing the four flights of stairs from the laundromat in the basement to my apartment. gets my pulse and breathing up a bit, but nothing dramatic. there's an elevator but i always take the stairs instead, so i guess my body adapts by keeping me fit enough to manage that with reasonable comfort.
