I hope to get closer to living that life.
The trips to the hardware or landscaping store when I'm buying 1000kg of materials might still warrant a motor vehicle, buy those are only a few times a year.
I've wanted to do my grocery shopping on a bike ever since reading this, but have only done it for a few things here and there.
https://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2011/04/18/get-rich-with-bikes/
I just pit them in cartons and jam 'em in my backpack. Always been fine so far, even this time when I also had 25lbs of bulk goods in random sized containers mixed in. Gotta admit, I was a little nervous this time around.
Always good to see fellow midwesterners here. 🙂
Yup, we were paying $5/dozen from the grocery store while they were shut down. It turns out, universities don't have any students to work the salesroom durring summer break. This time we will stock up before that happens. Our household eats fewer than a dozen eggs per week on average, and they last a long time.
So this is how I've been trying to get my #exercise. #Bicycling around town, hoeing up the #garden, digging 30" holes to plant horseradish, and so forth.
Why these things instead of going to the #gym or doing push ups?
1. Productivity. I want to do something productive while getting stronger. Lifting something and just putting it right back where it was isn't very motivating.
2. Money. Gyms cost money. Gasoline costs money. Car maintence costs #money. By riding my #bike, I can save some loot
3. Self reliance. #Gasoline prices go bonkers? Not going to hold me back. Broken car? Not going to slow me down. Broken #bike? I can fix that myself, cheaply.
4. #Privacy. This may sound like a weird one, but what can I say, I'm #weird. I very much enjoy running errands with just a bag of #cash. No ID. No #cellphone. If you're thinking "why such secrecy about when and where I buy eggs and other groceries?" might I remind you that privacy and secrecy are not the same thing.
5. Fun. I enjoy #exploring my town. When I'm driving a car, I take the same few main roads and see the same things whiz by every trip. When I'm on my bike, I just head the right cardinal direction on whatever street I feel like taking. Plus, I'm going at a speed that I can safely gawk, or easily stop and check out some art, a little free library or pantry, or whatever catches my fancy. Some day I'll take a camera with me and post some pictures of the types of things I see so you can see what I mean.
So I guess my point here, if I even have a point, is that I like #biking places and maybe you would too.
It's not for everyone, or every location, but it's something I think is worth considering. It does take time, but if you're replacing gym time with biking time, it might not actually take up any extra time. #GrowNostr
After getting eggs, I rode directly over to the food coop. They support #local #farmers, and just to give you an idea of how cool they are beyond just doing that, here's a picture of their store from summer of 2020:

I'm proud to shop at a store like this who has the courage to use their right to #FreeSpeech like this. And if you're going to mute me for saying this... you know what, I'm cool with that.
I rode my bicycle to the University's meat and egg salesroom again today. $6 for 30 eggs that live less than a mile from my house.

They don't take #cash or #bitcoin, but other than that they're pretty cool. Plus that price is hard to beat for any eggs, let alone for the good stuff.
Yes, but only a little. I live in #Illinois, and our soil is amazing (seriously, it's like 98 percentile in the world).
But I have given it a try using #compost tea instead of the proper #hydroponic nutrient mix. It worked but it seemed to grow more slowly and I had to sprout them outside of the hydroponic setup.
If I had the proper rock wool stuff, I'm told I could sprout them in the #hydroponics setup. At some point I might get the correct materials and expand what I have set up hydroponically.
My main souce for info on hydroponics is https://infosec.exchange/@tinker
They put together cheap AF, hydroponics setups, document the results and provide instructions for replicating their setup. The way they do it, they just set it up and then straight up ignore it for a month and a half and come back to leafy greens. It's perfect if you travel a lot, are forgetful or lazy. Very #LowTimePreference!
Tinker is a total #scavenger / #hacker and that's exactly the type of person I want to follow! I even went as far as setting up an RSS feed in Thunderbird to make sure I don't miss any of their #SolarPunk posts! I literally cannot recommend them highly enough.
Seedlings are going well. Fish peppers, hungarian peppers, and multi-colored bell beppers.

Grow your own food. Cook it. Preserve it.

This is awesome to see. It's a very scavenger/hacker solution to building a trellis and I love it!
I don't particularly like digging a big hole and moving a few hundred of pounds of dirt, but I do like the #health benefits of doing so and the idea that we are going to be #growing our own #horseradish.
So I'll probably be doing it again tomorrow. I need to just prioritize this over the other things in my life. I can find the time, it just means I won't be working on other stuff.

Anyone got any good sources they're willing to share for buying PLA+ filament in bulk? Ideally they'd accept #bitcoin, but that's not strictly necessary #3dprinting #asknostr
Couldn't see the video in Amethyst or my browser, but the audio was good. 🫂
I have an update about #QubesOS and #Signet compatibility.
1. I found a bug in Qubes' USB device attachment system
2. Signet works in Qubes if work around the aforementioned bug
3. No code changes were made to the Signet client noe the firmware, it was just a matter of working around the bug.
The Qubes bug can be worked around by attaching the USB device to a qube, detaching it, and re-attaching it.
I have no reason to believe this bug has any #security impact. I plan to report it upstream once I write a low-level tool to illustrate the issue as simply as possible (no QT, signet client, etc.; probably just a simple CLI tool).
Mein Gott, this is such a mystery. On my test machine, #Signet works fine on #Qubes 4.2, with a USB qube, even when the USB qube is disposable.
I'm trying to figure out WTF is going on here. Aside from slight differences in hardware, there's not much different between the test machine and my desktop.
#FDE is up next to test. That absolutely shouldn't make any difference, but it IS a difference in the config of these two systems.
If that works fine, then I guess it'll be time to try restoring some qubes from my backups to see if that is somehow making a difference (again, it absolutely should NOT be able to even cause this level of problem, but there are just so few differences at this point, I'm throwing out all my assumptions until I get to the bottom of this)
Hit me up if you have any questions and I'll do my best to help.
I have personal scripts to automatically set up nextcloud instances, but I'd have to clean them up and test them better before I'd be willong to release them.
If your rpi is a pico, then you can use it with meshtastic. https://meshtastic.org/docs/hardware/devices/raspberry-pi/
As for the pi boards that run Linux, as far as I can tell, the answer is that there's no software that implements the protocol Meshtastic uses. It could be written, or the existing code could be ported to a Linux executable, but I haven't seen anyone do that.
If only I were a dev!
I own an absolute killer domain https://easymail.in and have already been offered $3000 for it. Didn't bite
It would make a killer productivity suite (email, drive, calendar, notes, tasks, password manager) for the Indian market
It would be a Google killer
Google Workspace costs $3.50 per user per month in India. Zoho offers $0.70
I'd offer $0.50 with custom domains. India has 800 million Internet users
#grownostr
If you want to get started, I can vouch for Nextcloud being an outatanding productivity suite. It's main focus is files, but it has plugins for email, text chat (Matrix), voice/video chat and more.
If you wanted to run a private beta and just start with the basics such as files and documents, it'd let you prove out your idea and perhaps get that VC money (or skip the VC money and build it organically)
