Seen on Fedi:

Done! I built a functional Meshtastic node for $5.24:

RP2040-Zero - $1.74

RFM95 - $3.50

I omitted a screen, as that would have brought the price to $7.44. it works great over serial!

Thank you to vidalperezbohoyo on GitHub for this super detailed guide:

If you don't want a bunch of Docker junk, I've been working on a guide to get it set up outside of Docker.

Here are some notes thus far:

Thanks. I know there are resources out there and I do not expect them to all be equal quality. I appreciate the specific suggestion. 🫂

There are so many organisations that get compromised these days, it'd be overwhelming to post links to them all. But the Department of the Treasury getting hacked is a pretty big one. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/30/us/politics/china-hack-treasury.html

That second paragraph hits hard: "It was unclear from the Treasury’s limited first account of the episode exactly what the hackers were seeking. But senior officials with access to the intelligence on the breach said that it appeared to be entirely an espionage operation and not part of other Chinese efforts to insert malicious computer code into utility grids and water supply systems, giving them a capability to shut off critical American infrastructure."

Yes, and it's got excellent surface area for quick processing. It counts as brown.

Source: me. I do this.

Two more days until the #grocery #tax goes away in #Illinois. It was only 1%, but eliminating a tax is progress and every little bit helps.

For anyone who thinks global climate change isn't real:

Look, lets just set aside what 99.9% of the scientists have been telling us for decades for a moment and their track record of **underestimating** everything.

Have you not personally noticed the change? Have you talked to boomers (e.g. perhaps your parents/grandparents) and asked them if they've personally seen the effects? Have you talked to any farmers?

It doesn't take a science degree to feel the impacts that are already here.

You can make the argument that it's a big government conspiracy and whatever government you think is behind it has all scientists worldwide under their thumb, but it's a lot harder to argue with people's lived experience.

If we keep our current policies of clean energy, it will result in +3.1°C in global temperatures by the end of this century. If we reverse course, it'll be even higher.

https://www.reuters.com/business/environment/climate-set-warm-by-31-c-without-greater-action-un-report-warns-2024-10-24/

And keep in mind that the scientific consensus has always underestimated everything about climate change. Thus, this 3.1°C number is almost certainly low.

#ActivityPub has support for signed messages and there's a push to get the big software projects to start using them.

If they then abandoned the need for an account ny just accepting signed activities, they'd be very similar to #Nostr at that point.

Feel free to encourage them to sign activities. Maybe we can get the protocols closer to something that is easy to implement both at the same time (without a bridge).
