I might kill for clay! The gravel makes it damn near impossible to dig with just the shovel.
But hey, at least I can run the dirt through a screen and have my own gravel pit!
That's awesome!
Well, didn't finish the potato bed. Hit so much gravel that we ended up running into town an hour away to buy a digging pick. But I think I'm through most of the gravel and into the sandy loam and will be able to dig deeper tomorrow and actually plant potatoes.

Yup, I switched those didn't I! Some how forgetting that I'm adding mushroom compost. Yes our soil is bacterial heavy. We have alkaline soil with lots of limestone.
Oh, I've totally taken it as a challenge to prove that it's possible!
Starting the next bed, wish me luck! The sand is easy to dig in until you add in the gravel that we have and it becomes super difficult.

The lab didn't finish his food so the blue jay decided to try to help.

That's awesome! We have Matt Powers' regenerative soil course and are planning on implementing the soil food web techniques in our garden on our new property. We're super excited because everyone we've talked with has told us it's impossible to grow in our soil and we have to spend the money to put in raised beds. What they don't understand is that our soil is fungus heavy and we need to bring it into balance. We're hoping to be able to show that it's possible and help others grow more of their own food.
I appreciate it but yeah we're in the high desert and it's what we affectionately call wind season. Our winds are on average of about 20 to 25 mph, with gusts higher. But this past week we had actually wind warnings so our wind has been in the 30 to 40 mph. We are "patiently waiting" for a rare spring day without wind or at least low enough that we feel comfortable burn for an extended time.

Check out Healing Lyme: Natural Healing of Lyme Borreliosis by Stephen Harrod Buhner. He's figured out a herbal protocol for curing chronic lyme disease. If you're having symptoms 30 days after your initial bite then the allopathic medicine approach won't kill the borrelia bacterium in your system because they've already learned to mask themselves in your intestines. I have just started using this approach for chronic lyme.

Get a herding dog they said, it'll be fun they said... he's been at this rock pile all day because he saw a lizard early this morning...
This is the method we're looking at trying too, but first we need the winds to stop some!
Oh, I wish! Growing up we lived in an area that was too warm in the winter and they never bloomed. But I planted them as soon as I lived somewhere cooler and I plan on adding them this fall on our new property.
Listening to the live webinar with Dr. Elaine Ingham from Paul Wheaton's low tech kickstarter. She has so much knowledge about soil and the life in it.

Oh, I miss our lilacs! Can't wait to get some in on our new property.
Just a reminder (and mostly for me) fear does not come from God. Remember instead of giving into the fear to stop and ask "what can I do" and act on what you can do not what you can't.
