I know this was a satirical post, but a case could be made in regards to anti-steering rules that Apple is violating at least in the EU regarding "alternate payment methods" Couldn't zaps be under this classification?

Once Apple removes Damus from their App Store, you'll still be able to use the app if you have it installed. New users won't be able to install the app. Current users won't get new updates.
But remember, Damus is just an app. Damus is not Nostr. And Damus users have been down this path beforehand. Damus users in China experienced exactly this. And do you know what? THEY'RE STILL HERE.
I hope that Apple and nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s can come to a workable solution. Until that day comes, you have plenty of other choices.
You can use a web client with Nostore to keep your private key safe or you can install one of the other Nostr clients from the app store such as Plebstr.

Agree with most things you said, however history has shown us that reaching any sort of compromise is going to end in disaster as they will demand more concessions. Guarantee the next "request" will be to implement censorship tools to filter out "hateful" content and we will be back at square one like we are now with Damus booted off Apple. Sad to say I don't see a way Will and Apple are going to come to a workable solution as Will is playing in Apples sandbox/prison and they have all the cards
In my opinion nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s should consider some of the solutions point forth by the community so he can pivot Damus to be not so reliant on an app store committee and he will be able to sleep well at night because he didn't compromise on his convictions and ideals of what he wants the grand vision of the Damus client to be.
I may not use Damus as my client. But I'm under no disillusion that the one I am using is safe. Or that android is any better.
And for those of us here not running our own operating systems and relying on these app stores and companies to tell us how we're are allowed to use their devices will likely continue down this censorship path.
The gradual lock down of our ability to use anything but the features they tell us we are able.
I'm not sure what this news I've read this morning fully means, or how it will continue to play out. But networks like this are designed to be attacked like this.
I do however hope this doesn't continue playing out this way for Damus, it's users, and it's wonderful developer nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s.
Yet I sense these types of restrictions and attacks are only ramping up lately. Stay convicted friends.
I view it as not as an attack just on #nostr, but a warning shot at #Bitcoin as wel, that anything more than a valuable asset like virtual Gold won't be tolerated. #Bitcoin and #nostr represent a growing existential threat to the control grid of TPTB have set up for us. I fully expect Amethyst and Onyx to get the boot from the Play store at some point for some arbitrary reason, they just haven't gotten the attention of Google yet.
Any #dev thinking about creating a client should strongly consider making a PWA as nostr:npub1cmmswlckn82se7f2jeftl6ll4szlc6zzh8hrjyyfm9vm3t2afr7svqlr6f suggested, might be more work, but at least months/years of development won't go down the toilet because some committee didn't like something you were doing.
As a community we need to rethink our strategy towards clients as the bigger Nostr gets, the more attacks will happen and in greater severity. We also should consider supporting small business that values the same stuff we do and go out of our way to buy from these people, even better if their a friendly #nostrich
Those who get tired of the BS will find their way here. We can't save everyone and a lot of people will wake up one day in terror of the hellscape they live-in. If you haven't piled into the lifeboat yesterday or at the latest now, you're going down with the Orwellian ship and you won't be able to get to the lifeboat. The exits are rapidly closing as we speak.
We can only point them in the right direction. They need to do their own personal journey to freedom like we all did at some point and break free of the conditioning, we can only give directions on how to get here. We can't do the journey for them or club them over the head with it as they will resist against our attempts to save them from themselves.
People have short memories, don't care or both. If people weren't spooked by the ICloud breaches, Apple Pay hack, other apps being booted from their store or other security blunders and rethink their choices of product purchases, I don't think anything will. Sad for me to say that!

Absolutely, any app that uses Play or the IOS app store is at risk of being deplatformed. Amethyst, Onyx have just as much risk being booted as well, their not safe either and it's only a matter of when not if.
App developers need to stop relying on Google or Apple services for their apps to run and make them independent of them, looking at you MySudo!

Obligatory ๐๐. I am deeply saddened, but not surprised this has happened. My heart goes out to nostr:npub1xtscya34g58tk0z605fvr788k263gsu6cy9x0mhnm87echrgufzsevkk5s and nostr:npub1h50pnxqw9jg7dhr906fvy4mze2yzawf895jhnc3p7qmljdugm6gsrurqev for all the hard work they have done in building Damus and being ambassadors to the Nostr ecosystem in meatspace and elsewhere online.
I do want to take sometime and use this note to address the question of appeasement. We should never appease, as this has been tried before in the past. Parler, Gab or other apps that came before Nostr were removed for arbitrary reasons and one of those appeased and look what happened to it. Whether you agree with the politics of those places isn't the point. As self-determined individuals we should stand against any form of censorship that seeks to quash or restrict freedom of speech or freedom of exchange. Zaps and #Bitcoin are an existential threat towards the legacy system and Apple has an interest in quashing a threat as they have their own payment network with Apple Pay.
The reason Damus is being removed is likely because of Apple Pay as they view Bitcoin and Nostr as a threat to the Apple ecosystem and their bottom line. Every day more and more people are being purple and orange pilled and the powers that be don't want anymore horses leaving the barn.
The time for appeasement is over.
