Time to pivot to all web apps?
Discussion
Fucking been time for a long time
Might jus be the way all along
Wen AI phone?
Why support a company that hates the way you use their products in the first place…
“My Credit Cards blocked my transactions, time to pivot to all cash?”
Manufacturers/carriers definitely don’t want you using their devices however you want last time I checked. As much as I hate being so far into the Apple ecosystem, especially after this, there’s no free lunch. Android users are paying for it in other ways. You might not be giving your data to Google to sell to the world but pretty much everyone else you know is. I’ll definitely pay more for more freedom & privacy and it doesn’t have to come Apple. (preferably not)
Pay less and get best of both worlds. Brand New Pixel Devices are 1/2 - 3/4 the price of iPhones. Install GrapheneOS or CalyxOS on said Pixel. Use FOSS apps as much as possible directly from the developers (yes you can install without an App Store) or from FDroid.org Add an ad/tracker blocker like ones built into VPNs or a stand alone one.
You took the time to understand bitcoin this takes a fraction of the time.
Yeah but then I gotta convert the whole family to make it all run smoothly… they like their devices. Besides, the target nostr user won’t do any of that. I’m still devoting a lot of time to understanding bitcoin so I can educate others. Not being able to zap using app store apps doesn’t seem worth convincing everyone in my circle to drop Apple
iMessage lock in is a real thing especially when it comes to family.
People don't understand how powerful web apps can be. PWAs are criminally underutilized and underestimated territory. People just think "oh I need to build an app" because that's what people have done to disrupt and strike it rich since the App Store in 2008.
Don't get me wrong. I wholeheartedly support Damus and other Nostr and Bitcoin apps. But generally speaking, if we want freedom we aren't going to get it from an app store overlord, but that's ok because the web is powerful and robust and people just need to realize they can use it without permission.
Websites can utilize most phone sensors, spawn background processes to offload work, run assembly compiled down from Rust or TypeScript, run full 3D animation via WebGL and WebGPU (or use GPU hardware for mining/calculations), install to your phone as an app, run persistent workers, use push notifications, store unlimited local data in IndexedDB, and interface with Bluetooth and USB devices. AND MORE!
Looks at this cool new stuff: https://youtu.be/q1fsBWLpYW4
Time to PWA it up
Yes should have been done yesterday, imo.
What are the trade offs for doing a web app instead of a native app store app? Is it just easier to make app store apps, or is there actually more functionality compared to web apps?
Seems like this is the way. PGW is the future?
How come that's not the standard by now?
