I’m not familiar with Keller’s “Theology of the cities,” but I’ve benefited from his books and sermons. So I felt inclined to defend Keller as I read the article. But the author’s critique may be justified.

I was also put off by the author’s writing style. One too many cheap shots. Ex. Sliding in a comment that Keller “was so pretentious” because he spelled civilization the British way is irrelevant.

Worse is the exaggerated and baseless claim that Keller worshipped cities: “Cities, of the type that Keller worshipped, are no type and shadow of the New Jerusalem to come.”

Maybe there’s some entertainment/rhetorical value to the author’s writing style, particularly if you’re predisposed against Keller and cities? 🤷‍♂️

But I did appreciate the author’s reflections on the virtues of homesteading. I’m not a city dweller, so I’m inclined to agree.

The subtitle of the post reads: “If you are watching closely enough, you'll see the Holy Ghost blowing his breath away from the cities. Follow Him.”

We should follow the Lord and go wherever He is calling us. It could be the country. It could be a town or city. It could be a foreign land. We’re pilgrims and people need to hear (and see) the gospel wherever they live.

Really good article in that you agree with the author’s critique of Keller and defense of homesteading? What about it particularly resonated with you?

“All Christians must beware of the lure of possessions and the temptation to protect one’s physical existence at the expense of one’s eternal destiny.”

{Blomberg, Neither Poverty Nor Riches, 127-128}

During bull markets, I am more:

1. Prone to forget that I am a pilgrim on my way home

2. Tempted to secure a materially better, more comfortable life

Motivation matters.

When I forget who I am in Christ, good desires become twisted into idolatrous ones. As NGU, I am tempted to forget that I am utterly dependent on God and am called to steward his resources for his mission and glory.

I have a low time preference, and I suspect many of you do, too. But why are we stacking? Motivation matters.

Praying that the Lord would guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus in 2025.

Happy new year! Excited for 2025 and what the Lord has in store for us.

“Good faith” in this context = genuine/honest desire to understand.

Also, what do you mean by “being put into a routine of nonsense?”

Your response sparks other questions. You seem to have asked and have answers to them.

What is faith?

Who is God?

What does God want?

How can you know what God wants?

Nope. 🙂‍↔️ Marketing material from Jewkes Custom Home Design.

Happy Lord’s Day! May we be reminded of who we are in Christ.

It's very difficult to get Christian ministries to adopt bitcoin because you need consensus amongst the executive team, board, and major donors.

All love the mission, but many are not interested in delving into the business model and finances. A conundrum.

Merry Christmas! I hope your day is filled with JOY and HOPE today.

Joy because Jesus, the Saviour of the world, was born this day. Hope because he will come again.

He who was infinitely rich became poor for our sake so that by his poverty we might become rich.

He gave up all of his treasure in heaven and humbled himself, even to the point of death.

Why?

To make us his treasure.

In what ways are you looking to your bitcoin stack for significance or security?

Look to Jesus.

We become what we worship. Worship Christ and become more like him, or worship money (bitcoin) and become more like it.

Don’t be the foolish man who knew God but didn’t honor him as God or give thanks to him. He exchanged the glory of the immortal/incorruptible (Gk. aphthartou) God for idols. (Rom. 1)

Currently reading Neither Poverty nor Riches by Craig Blomberg.

Will share snippets and reflections as I go.

Summary points from the final chapter (I’m quoting):

1. Material possessions are a good gift from God meant for his people to enjoy.

2. Material possessions are simultaneously one of the primary means of turning human hearts away from God.

3. A necessary sign of a life in the process of being redeemed is that of transformation in the area of stewardship.

4. There are certain extremes of wealth and poverty which are in and of themselves intolerable.

5. Above all, the Bible’s teaching about material possessions is inextricably intertwined with more ‘spiritual’ matters.

Motivation matters. Why are you stacking sats? To what end?

Happy Reformation day!
